I am almost about to close a deal selling my 84 BBi less than 4k miles perfect with full service. I just do not use it, its so perfect that i never take it out. I realize the market is bad now but i am not sure if it will rebound any time soon. I already am having second thoughts and have to give answer over the next 2 days. all red with light tan interior a time capsule with the plastic still on the door sills, only a small scratch on the spoiler which i did on a driveway (like a dummy)
my thoughts are to buy a cheap ferrari and drive the doors off it (like a 355) PS I do have a 74 Dino flare/chair thats great shape so no tears for me. but the boxer is in a different level. I guess the real question is where is the market and where is t going???

Thats a tough one. Boxers are one of my favorite Ferrari's. To find an untouched time capsule is a hard act to follow(a car is only original once) Better to admire this work of art in the garage, than some numbers on a statment. Hold this stock :)

Would you enjoy it more if you could drive it w/o worries about everything staying so perfect? If the answer is yes, maybe you should consider a trade for a very nice car that feels ok to drive. I bet that if you offered your perfect time capsule car there would be many willing to trade plus cash. Although I am not one of the willing, its a thought that you could easily explore here.

If you decide to sell but like the 12cyl experience, go for a 550 or 575, much more usable than the 355 imo.

I also have a never drive it 83 boxer....maybe it is an 84 ...I wouldn't sell it if I were you ...unless you need the money. Boxers have been THE MOST RESILIENT in terms of holding their value on the way down in this economy.

If your car really is perfect you could grab around $125-150 for it right here on Fchat...thye are iconic though, I especially like the Disco big ashtrays in both door sills.

for the $$$ if you want to pocket some dough, and spend $50 on a car....I would not hesitate on a 96 or newer well kept F355 with TUBI ......amazing daily drivers.! Put the other $100K away.

Selling is a personnel choice. Not a great time to sell but there will always be money around for strong no-stories cars with low miles.
Sounds like you don't use the car because of concerns about losing value due to it's highly original status.

I find the modern cars unappealing- but you can buy a 355 if you want and bomb around in it without worrying about losing much value.
Or buy a well used 360 since there is little price difference between driver quality 355 and 360 now. Ignore all those people who still think their 360 is worth north of 80K.

I would really like to see pictures of your cars if you would post them.

    Dear Ferraristi,

You know, this train of thought is so damn crazy.

Why are you DENYING yourself the enjoyment of your OWN car! So your boxer is perfect....so what. I say you're LUCKY to have a car in such great condition. Tear off the plastic and drive it!

How much will you lose in value driving a 100 point car vs. selling in a down market? I think the "sell in a down market" will lose more. Drive the car for a few years...everyday, then when the market is hot ( it shall be someday) do a restoration and sell....if you must.

This is your car, you worked hard for it, it's the car you dreamed of....what the heck are you selling it for?

....to drive something lesser (in your mind) ?

Don't worry about the rock chips, curb rash or bugs on the windshield. What can replace the excitement of being behind the wheel of the car you truly love. You know they don't make cars like these anymore.

You slip behind the wheel, twist the key and hear that "mechanical symphony of rhythmic vibration" come to life. You actually shift the lever into gear ( no F1 paddles ) and ease out the clutch. You are laid back in the seat with that raked windshield running just past your head. As you accelerate, you see the side and rear view mirrors vibrate at the revs rise and you think... (despite the economy) "life is good"

Don't sell....but you MUST drive it!

    ....and in the rain!

Unless you are in dire financial straits and need the cash, I say keep the Boxer and drive it. Why save the car for the next owner? Its like marrying a beautiful virgin and not...well you know the rest. Sure you will lose some resale value by putting a few thousand miles a year on her ...but how much are those smiles for miles worth! While my BB512i was not perfect when I bought it in 2001, it was a 90 point car with only ~12,000 klms. I now have close to 30,000 klms and those ~18,000klms have been well worth a little wear and tear.

I think there's a different type of wear that goes on in cars that sit. If you drive it well, ie. not winding the tach around the dial when cold, let it come to operating temps, do the maintenance, nice clean oil etc she'll do great. These cars were meant to driven. Sounds like you have a real find of a nice car. Would it make more sense to get a BB and restore it to the level of your present car? I'm crazy about the BB and if I had cash and no BB, I'd change that position around. So maybe ask yourself if you'd buy back in to your very car. If the answer is no, you might make that move into something else. The economy is attrocious, and this must be a bad time to sell, but it's a great time to buy, and this time buy a car (whatever model) with a few more chips. I think all ferrari's are masterpieces and appreciation is inevitable, but that attack on the senses that comes from driving - priceless!

    imho

Still a bad time to sell-off any "asset" if you don't have to. It's next to impossible to get full value for anything right now. Even serious collectors are taking advantage of the bargain buying frenzy. No one (regardless of their financial position) is going to pay top dollar for anything when they don't have to....

If you can afford to hang on to the car --- do so.... And, 1000 or so gentle miles over the next year or two isn't going to hurt the ultimate value of an excellent Boxer :)

I can't imagine owning a Boxer and not driving it, simply because they're just soooo much fun to drive!
Swap off you garage queen for a good driver and cash, and get out there and enjoy the ride.

...then don't worry about it. Don't wreck it and do the preventative maintenance. Drive it. Who cares if it gets wet? It rains in Italy, too. Maybe a rock will scratch it a little. So what? If you want to go full concours, then save your $$$ for a repaint and professional resto.

Keep the car. There ain't that many of them in the US. It's really a rare beauty. It's funny when more F40s show up at a run than Boxers!

i always find the should i sell my boxer for a 355 or other ferrari posts a bit strange. why does one buy a boxer? is it becuase it is an entry level priced ferrari? is it because it is a ferrari that has any level of utility (some ferraris actually do)? is it because it is user friendly and a pleasure to use when running an erand or two? is it a value when total cost of ownership is contemplated? it because you want a perfectly executed car fit and finish wise?

answer to all of the above.....NO!!!!

You buy a boxer because you recognize that it was the first true ferrari mid engined supercar...it was a supercar and remains such.

You buy a boxer because you want a car that was a thinly veiled race car

you buy a boxer because you realize it was really the last of the true hand made ferraris

you buy a boxer because there are no two boxers alike...they ALL differ slightly. each is as different as each individual that owns it.

you buy a boxer because you realize that in a ferrari collection, you must include a road going mid engine beast...the boxer is a cornerstone car!

you buy a boxer because there is NOTHING cooler than opening up those clam shells for the world to see!!

You buy a boxer because there are few cars in th world that were ever so impracticle and single purpose event type machines

you buy a boxer because when you decide to go out for a drive, it requires donning one's armour!!!

you buy a boxer because you are certain to be the only person on your block to posses one!!!!

Why don't we put a halt to pondering the sale of these thoroughbreds we are soooooo fortunate to own!!!!!!

    best,

    pcb

I also have a ultra low mileage Boxer with just 1000 original miles. At first I was also afraid to put miles on the car. I thought about selling and buying some thing I can drive. Since the market is weak, I decided to drive her and enjoy the car. After the new Larini stage 2 the car became so much fun to drive. I had the car out today and really opened her up and now have new found respect for these great cars. The car is amazing! Link : http://www.anamera.com/en/detail/car/36575/index.html?no_cache=1&ret=63 There are a lot of average to poor Boxers available @ $100K, so to get the right price for the type of car you have may be difficult today. Please post a few pics of your car and if you don't mind tell us what the asking price is.

    Geno.

If you keep it than at least show it in shows. It is getting old enough and looks very good that it would bring joy to many people who saw it in a car show. Than not only to you get to enjoy it but so do others.

If you sell it get a great inexpensive Ferrari like a 355 or similar and really drive it. Keep the rest and invest or save it.

As far as the markets (my specialty, and by the way, this is not investment advise, just opinion) the markets are stabalizing at this point so you have a small window (maybe a month tops) before the bottom falls out for the next run down, which will have a low of around 20% below the last levels. Ferrari's have been fairly resilient so far but not sure how much longer that will last. NO one and no market is immune from this economy.

    I hope that helps.

Wow, a dilemma for sure. You've got two 'classic' Ferraris, both 'sense of occasion' type cars. Lots of good advice offered here. Seems that if you get a highly depreciable car now (modern) you'll obviously and knowingly take that hit while the Boxer likely stays more stable or grows in value.

I would not sell mine. This thread alone made me go drive mine today. I walked by it and it whispered, "Go get the keys". So I did.

But if you're not using yours at all, stuff still goes bad, still requires dollars in with little real enjoyment out. I can appreciate that you want to drive your Ferrari, so if the Boxer is not doing it for you, get the usability you desire. A modern car may just be something you need to get out of your system!

The 360s are depreciated pretty good and SEEM more reliable than 355s, so cost of ownership more limited, not accounting for depreciation. For 'modern' mid-engine, that'd be my pick.

Less modern than the 360, but more usable than a 'classic' is the 512TR. What a car. Experts and pundits can voice opinions on cost of ownership, but you'll be jumping forward in development, modern controls, comfort, functionality. Windows work, AC is freezing, power is substantial, and a very good value.

For 'near' classic mid-engine, balanced against slow to nil depreciation and great reliability, the 328 is a tidy package, hard to beat. You'd pocket a large difference in cash here.

Next would be the 550, also highly depreciated and a very usable car, quite different from what you've got.

A dilemma still, but a darn good one! Let us know.
