Am I maturing

was out sunday afternnon in the BBI. Went into a long sweeper, no other car in sight and camme out the bend at redline in 4th. On the straight up ahead saw a clump of traffic and slowed.

Suddenly a gallardo goes barreling by so I put foot and started closing the gap, but then slowed as we appraoched traffic. gallardo went imo like an ass weaving at speed through the traffic and I just slowed to highway speed. When I was younger would not have backed off. But truth be told, I like speed but in a reasoanble manner and could see the headlines, you know two exotics racing etc. Frankly I had my fun and nothing to prove. I guess with age comes wisdom.

 

That is a great place to be, welcome. I also will allow the danger ranger to go on ahead and create a nice laser-free zone as I more sanely get through the traffic and then in the clear space my friend has cleared....resume the Italian tune-up!!!

EDIT: Ahh, redline in fourth! I know how awesome that is!! Let's have a moment of silence for the joy of redline in fourth no matter what kind of Ferrari you have.

Maybe so but there's no harm in it.
Knew I was getting old in 2003, sitting on the Motorway in 3 lanes of solid stationary traffic queuing for the Spanish GP, 5 or 6 young guys on superbikes wearing T shirts rocketed through the lines of cars doing maybe 80 or 90mph. And people think Moto GP racers are crazy, I've never seen anything so mad in my life.

 

Buy a Hyundai.
Lots safer.

Not maturing, just have seen too many horrible outcomes to know it's not worth the risk. It's the same reason that I never streetrace anymore, despite the occasional temptation.

The police, media and attorneys are very unkind to exotic owners should something go wrong.

The Gallardo owner likely hasn't owned a powerful car before and is riding his horsepower trip fantasy. Hope he wakes up before he makes the news.

 

Street racing is just gonna get u in trouble and in a real bad way. I just wave at people who want to race and smile.

That's the better option.

Compared to the track, streets are *scary*.

(Very few drivers on the track are gabbing on their cell phones. )

 

One of those weird conundrums. Ferraris not really great track cars,(have sonmething else for this anyway) and not really for driving slow on the street. Which sort of makes it superflous. So we pinch those little open road drives here and there on occasion. Think I am going to try some of those vinatge rallies out west where you can go.

 

Unless you're racing for money or pink slips, best to be the second fastest car on the roadway, with the fastest one just ahead of you. He then acts like a human radar detector and roadway drivability avatar. If you lose your maturity for a moment, he can also show you a path you might want to take to move through the same traffic.

If he hits his brakes, you know you either need to slow for road conditions, or merely to let the nice policeman who just got him clocked for speeding get onto the roadway so he can write him something to memorialize the day's drive.

Kind of reminds me of the old joke about the two Bulls sitting on top a hill. One older and mature one younger and filled with Testosterone.they are gazing down in the valley at all the beautiful cows. Young bull says " let's run down the hill and do one of them. The older wiser bull says let's stroll down and do them all!"

 

I think it's a simple case of having nothing to prove. As was said, "been there, done that". I use the term "rabbit", from The Gumball Rally (The Gumball Rally (1976) - IMDb). Let the crazy get the ticket. If you're even pacing him, the cop might pull you both over. You've got lots more experience about whether your moves are endangering yourself and others. But you've probably got less testosterone too.

 

Alas, at 72, I still get the crazy bug on the road... not as much in the F-car these days as in the V-Caddy, but the bug still chomps on me on occasion... just Monday, in fact...
