http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4519345463&category=6212 Guys Just wondering if I should chase this car or not. I really like what he's done with the car, but don't think the price is worth it. On ebay, the car ended for $35,600. I offered the gentleman $37,500 cash, figuring to negotiate down to this number or within +/-$1500 or so. However, after repeated emails, the gentleman states that his price for the car is a firm $42,900. Also according to him the car is a certified Euro with DOT papers. What do you guys think, chase the car or keep on waiting for another car? I'm not that hung up on a euro that I wouldn't settle for a regular QV, but the year and milage are right for me. But I feel $42,900 is about $5,000 overpriced for this car, considering I'm going to probably have to put that amount right back into the car to make it straight by my means. Also, I'm sure if I wait a little longer I can pick up a regular QV from the 34-36K range. Advice? Comments? Any feedback is welcomed.
The guys been overseas alright, WAY overseas. The car is over priced. If the guy did put that much money into it, he's NUTS if he thinks he's going to get that money back. After reading the posting, I don't like his attitude. He belittles every other 308 out there. Yeah, his is the only "real" 308. BTW, I suspect its a US car with Euro bumpers. He says he did a Carfax check. Euros can't be checked through Carfax. Notice he didn't provide the VIN. "Its not the ghastly cream crema one sees so often in these cars." Comes across like an a**hole, IMHO After all that money all he does to improve performance is change the muffler? Walk away from this guy and his car.
Run, run! Even at $37k the car is overpriced. Get a 328, be happier and you'll end up with a car that is original and holds its value a lot better. The guy sounds like a jerk...
I hate to say it but the older cars are starting to raise in prices. Ebay is not a good register of current prices. The days of the 20k and low to mid 30k cars are done.
Looking at the ad there are a few flags that I would question. 1. the vin is wrong. 2. repaint. 3. repainted top. 4. Too many custom touches. Euro lights, GTO wheels, pedals, etc. 5. side mirrors. The $40k price is good for an original conditioned, well serviced car. He should be asking in the low 30K's.
Way overpriced. A very good condition 30K mile 308 should be in the $35K range. High $30's will get a nice '86 or '87 328. There was a nice Euro 308 QV for sale on Ferrariads a couple of months ago for $30K. There will be quite a few cars for sale starting in April as people try to get in on prime selling season. If you can wait until then, you will have a much better selection to choose from. There just hasn't been much available this year since about November.
The owner is on crack...move on. Especially if you have not seen the car up close and in person. Everything looks great on Ebay. He has your number, when the crack high goes away, he just may call you.
Putting on my FLAME SUIT. I wouldn't pay 30K for any 308 out there. Seriously, 328's and 348's are too close to the mid to upper 30's right now. Also like others have said this car has too may "upgrades" that are not original and only depreciate a car like a Ferrari. While the painted top may look good it will scratch and it isn't correct for the car, same for the bumpers , wheels, and the leather on the shelf behind the seats. If the car were completely original with all documents from new and under 10K miles then maybe you could justify that price for a nice museum piece for your garage.
The VIN that is posted on that auction -is correct- for a Euro 308. Here's how to check Ferrari VINs: http://www.ferrariclub.com/faq/vin.html The price is crazy though and if someone has that much money to spend on a Ferrari, they should consider a nice 328 GTS instead.
What's strange is I work here at the FOX lot in Los Angeles and the building in the background is the Fox Tower. I've never seen this car running around anywhere around here! I certainly would have noticed it. Avalon, CA is on Catalina Island (where it's ebay 'located'). Nice car but I'd agree WAY overpriced. As much as I love them I wouldn't pay more than 35K for a QV.
Thanks guys for the advise. I thought the guy was on crack too, but here is the email he sent to me: "Hello, The high bidder on the car was a Chevy DEALER. I've already turned down offers of $39k. I will not sell below $42k. A few months ago I sold an unrestored 308 to a now very happy fellow for $36.9k. This car has more than $15k in improvements over that car. Regards," and "Hello, The Buy It Now price is the reserve and I won't sell for any less. I'm not desparate to sell and I've had a lot of interest in the car (the current high bidder is a car dealer!). I'll be listing the car for sale in Europe, and given the strong Euro, expect to sell it without worries." So this guy seems to think very highly of his car, and I like what he's done to it but I'm glad to know I'm not alone in thinking this car is not worth all that. Now even I know that restoring a car not back to original condition doesn't necessarily add value to the car, in fact original is usually the way to go. I've had many cars that I've added many performance parts too and on a trade or resale you may get 1/4 the price if your lucky. And maintenance done is sort of a "pay to play" feature, it just comes from owning the car. So if this guy does ever email me or call me back, I'm saying $32,000-$33,000, sounds like that's all the car is worth and that's on a very good day. Finally, I agree, hasn't been much for choices. My problem is I have the money, I'm ready to buy, and I can't find the car I'm looking for. I must spend about 1 hour a night searching the web for a car, and nothing has really caught my eye. Nevertheless, it is winter here in MD and even if I do get a car it's going to sit in a garage for 4 months anyway, so what hurry am I in? I must make myself be patient, and that is the hardest thing for me to do. "Must learn patience Daniel son" Thanks again for the advice guys!
What are you looking for?? 76 Glass $35K 77 Steel $29K 308QVs, must be six of them last time I read a FCA Newsletter........
You are correct, anything not OEM RUINS the car for resale as well as FCA judging events, not that I care so much about that... These guys are full of Cr@p man, walk on.... Talk to Martin at Cavallino Motors, or Wade Nunez.....real world guys. I'm gonna write up my life someday and sell it on ebay. Those guys make a train wreck sound like a good time...........
I'm not a member of FCA yet, thought it was like PCA and you had to own to be a member. If not, I'll have to go and register; think it's like $135 right? Also, I'm looking for sort of a specific car but not really.....84 or 85 308 GTS QV. Must be red exterior with tan interior. Must have 40,000 or less milage on it. I would prefer a Euro, but not necessary. Basically the Magnum P.I. car.....Detroit Tiger's hat optional
I just read that whole ad...this car is ruined! Painted roof, non original interior treatments on EVERYTHING! They'll laugh you out of a REAL Ferrari event! Sorry........... '85 308QV GTS Red/tan Forzamotorsports.com $37,500. '85 308QV GTS Red/tan $42,500 216 663-3211 x. 247 These are old, may be gone, but they were original unmolested cars without all that "best non original Ferrari in the world' BS........
i was going to list my GTB for sale soon, i am spying on a few BBoxers as i type this. Pm me or see some of my posts about my '77 GTB *20433*.
'87 328GTS Red/tan 14,700 miles, 100% as factory 30K service done, $52,500. I mean if you are going to spend the money do it on an original car, that's all. FCA is worth it, IMO. Good magazines and I think the Newsletter has the cars from owner's that care about them, not a bunch of used car speculators. (With apologies to all the great chatters here....Chuck Ligon, Martin, Wade Nunez), these guys make a living without sounding like P.T. Barnham, ya know? I even found a two owner 29K miles car from a 78 year old engineer in Ferrari Ads.......$25K last May I've gone 5,000 miles and haven't even changed the oil yet! Take your time and find a good one....ebay ain't it! Maybe I'd better change the oil......."Hello, Royal Purple?"
beautiful day here to......10 degrees with some snow flurries.....may get up to 30 degrees by tomorrow, may need the suntan lotion.....time to DRI......what am I thinking.....SHOVEL SNOW
