I am going to give my age away here.
I went to my 40th high school class reunion last weekend (40 years...really??).
This was the first reunion I have attended. I avoided them like the plague before. I only had two or three really good friends in high school and did not want to go back and hear all the others crow about what they had accomplished in their lives. Well the more I thought about it the more I wanted to go. I mean, at least to myself, I have had some pretty neat accomplishments in this old life (got to ride MX professionally for Kawasaki, was on the front page of USA Today in a color feature, ran a BMW store for 17 years, was picked by BMWNA as the most knowledgable BMW specialist in North America, ran FoD for three years and have gotten to meet many, many great people during that time) So I thought, okay you are not a doctor or a lawyer, you have not had a book published or gone to the moon but it is time to go back.

If you have never gone to one of your class reunions and you graduated more than 10 years ago, do yourself a favor and go. We had a graduating class of a little more than 400 and 128 showed up for the reunion. After 40 years, that many showed up. 27 have passed on, many who were acquaintances who I did not know had passed. There were actually 13 there from our 3rd grade elementary class. We had a picture made of that group together along with the original picture that some brought.....

I had no idea just how much fun one of these things could be. I have caused myself to miss out on a lot and really regret having made the decision not to go in the past. Everyone who attended was actually sincerely glad to see everyone else. People who would have never spoken to me in high school walked right up and gave me big hugs. I had never thought about it before, but in high school we all had our own little niches due to interests we shared, sports, drama, music, chess, science or whatever, that took up our time then. We hung around with those of like interests. Now, after 40 years, we remember those interests but remember all those we knew in school more. The people are more important than any acheivement we could receive.

I will go back in 5 years for the 45th and plan on the 50th (God willing). If I am still around by that time, I am sure that there will be some who will not be. Time takes its toll and time is marching on.

Do yourself a big favor and go to your reunions. If you do not go, you will never know what you missed...........

BTW, I was one of the few who still had his hair, teeth and did not carry any luggage around the waistline......Hah, I got those old athletes on that one (smirk).........

And there were actually two women there who still looked as good now as then, only with a few years added. But they definitely did not look like 40 years later, maybe 15-20 years.......The miracle of plastic......

went to my 20th, interesting but haven't and won't attend more.

One observation: the really, nice people in HS were still really nice people, the aholes (once they got out and experienced the real workld) were suddenly nice people..or at least trying to be nice people.

I went to my 10th year reunion. The atmosphere was somewhat chilly. People standing around going, "Oh,....hey,....how's it goin'?" The pompas jerks stilled seemed the same. Many people seemed more interested in the beer keg than talking to old friends. I left without any wonderful memories. I passed on any further such encounters.

I swear the best looking women at my 25th was my old girlfriend from my senior year. My wife even made a comment about how good she looked. Of course I didn't tell my wife who she once was.

My 40th is on its way, but I am not even sure if there will be any reunion

I beleive the school was closed in 1985. It is funny you will run into some of the people you met at school. A few girls will never change even in thier fifties. Looks or otherwise, of course, plastic is fantastic.
Some of the guys are still great. Some, Oh well, looks like the drugs did catch up.

I have heard the following over the years.
I never thought you would amount to anything
My thoughts were, you are still fat.

Are you single, or have time for a coffee?
My thought, What makes you think I will date you now?

In the final analysis. I whish everyone of them good health
    and a long happy life.

Exactly my thoughts. If you didn't want ME around when you were young and hot, why would I want YOU around when you're old and ugly? What goes around comes around. I call it Nature's Revenge. Young babes turn their noses up at you when they have the world at their doorstep. But after a few failed marriages, a few kids, and numerous extra pounds, they suddenly decide that YOU are now good enough for them. Hah! Fat chance babe.

The homecoming queen from my class was the last person in my graduating class that I actually crossed paths with. I had talked to her on the phone a few times. About 10 years after high school I was riding down the escalator in the mall and noticed the girl behind the jewelry counter right at the end of the escalator. It was her. I stepped off the escalator and walked 10 feet ahead and said hello. The reception was chilly. I guess that I was still a low life who was pretty much unworthy of any real conversation even though she grew up in a stereotypical surburban house just a few streets over from me. But then, don't they always think they are better than anybody else, even though they come from the same background?

My 30th is coming up next month. I am conflicted about going.

That same weekend is the only weekend all summer that 5 of my buddies and our sons can get together for a backpacking trip.

    I attended the 10th, 20th and even a low key 25th reunion.

At the 10th most people were in to impressing everyone with how far they had come.

At 20 most people were just happy to see you and catch up. The ladies were still dressing to kill.

It was really interesting to see what people had done. Some still lived within 5 miles of the school. Others left town within weeks of graduating and only came back for reunions.

So should I make a poll?

    Backpacking or Reunion?

One of the guys who had been to every reunion over the years said that at 10 years it was almost the same way as when we were in school. At 20 some of the classmates started to open up and become more friendly. At 30 there were very few a**holes and now at 40 everyone is just glad to see that the others have survived also.

One of the guys I played on the baseball team with is now a very respected opthamologist in Dallas. Several high powered attorneys, quite a few business owners and some very successful investors were also present. It is funny that when we started to relive some of the things that went on back then, they completely dropped their guard and join in with the laughter.

The only one who was a turnoff is the one whose motorcycle shop I purchased two bikes from before I went pro. I purchased them before I left to go in the Navy and did just so so while riding out of his shop. When I came back I guess I had a different mindset or something as for some reason my riding ability had increased markedly. At this point he could no longer keep up with me and for some reason started to resent me when I switched from Yamaha to an offer from Kawasaki. I think he still resents the fact that I changed loyalties. It was just that Kawasaki was trying to get into the MX world and wanted some riders and Yamaha was not really looking because they already had some high powered riders on board and I had the opportunity to go from a virtual privateer to a sponsored rider. I could not pass it up. Too bad, I really liked this guy when I rode out of his shop. He was a real card and a lot of fun...........

how much did those factory kawasakis weigh back then and was the suspension about 2" of travel? Way before arenacross and triple jumps...

My uncle used to ride a Bultaco. What was that and where was it from???

I have a friend who rode for Kawasaki in the 80's. Paid him bout $70K a year at age 15 and he had a couple semi trailers, mechanic and all that jazz. He wanted to play football in college so Kawasaki said nope so he quit. First year he blew out both knees. No kawasaki, no football. He now weighs about 280 lbs.

How do you find out about a high school reunion? I have moved several times since HS, how would they ever find me to let me know about one?

Amazing how fast it flies by. I had a big high school class--almost 1000. Our 10th reunion was at this big bar in Chicago. Lot's of fun, but at the time I felt like the only guy in the room who hadn't let himself completely go. For our 20th reunion, they arranged a dinner at a country club, like some old-fogey banquet. And they were charging $150 to boot. I considered going, but hanging out at the football game with my friends it seemed like everyone I "reuned" with was auditioning for the new hit TV show "I'm Such A Huge Success". So I blew off the dinner.

Mine actually had about 6 inches on the rear and 8 one the front. Weight was right at 200 lbs. About 195 if I recall right. They were just starting to experiment with titanium so I had the "new" exotic metals on the bike. You are right about not having triples. I would have killed myself attempting to do them. Doubles were scary enough.

The Bultaco is a Spanish bike. Jim Pomeroy was the first American to win an international 250cc race when he won the Spanish GP on one. They were actually quite nice to ride, once you got used to them.

Who was your friend and what region did he ride out of? I rode in the mid 70's and there were no large contracts then. They gave me a practice 250 and a race 250. I had a Hertz type truck with Mean Green on the side. My mechanic was also my truck driver. We got the bikes, truck, mechanic/driver, all our parts and expenses paid and got to keep our winnings. Also had a bonus structure for finishing in top ten and up. Also goty paid a little extra when we put on M/X schools. Unfortunately I proved to be the entertainment at most of the races we ran so I missed the bonus matrix by not finishing in the top ten. I never said I was national champion material, I just happened into the contract at the right time. Ride only last a little over two years. Then they went out and got people like Steve Wise..............

There is actually one photo in the archives with me racing at Lake Whitney in 1973. If you click on my public profile and go to threads I started you can find it. It was posted on 5-14-2004. You can see the difference in todays exotic bikes and the dinosaurs we rode then.

OR - dare I say it - look up your class on classmates.com

I don't care for the business practices of that website, but if you are having a reunion, it will be on that website (assuming someone from your class posted it there), or better yet, just call the school itself and ask, they 'should' be able to tell you how to get ahold of whoever is organizing it.....
