Hey guys, I'm thinking about biting the bullet on Dodge Ram 1500. I ran across a nice looking once that met my criteria with the 4X4 and Hemi. As far as looks are concerned, the truck looks great. But it has 170,000 miles! I'm well aware that it's an absurd amount of miles. But I have a short commute daily, and am not going to be putting a ton of miles on it. Am I crazy for considering this? Here's the Ram in question: http://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/ctd/2014723779.html Any honest answers are appreciated! Chris
Without looking at the car in the link, think about this. Any car with 170,000 Miles has been seriously used. The wear and tear on the mechanicals would have taken their toll and been replaced or about to do so at your expense. Nice looking car. I'm not sure what the asking prices are on these, but 170K is serious mileage and almost eliminates resale value. GL
Pretty tough sell if you change your mind. Price a rebuilt transmission for it first, it's ugly. It will go sooner or later.
+1. I like Rams, especially the Sport, R/Ts, and SRT 10s. But what was posted above. Yes, that is a stupid move. 9k can buy a lot more truck. What is bringing back memories is riding the bus in high school and the light turned yellow, the truck next to us was a Turbo-diesel Ram 3500, and it was a six-speed. The sound that truck made when the owner downshifted. EDIT: Do some more research. Why exactly do you need the 4X4, especially in Detroit (assuming that is where you are from, from the Craigslist). Most of the trucks in Texas don't even go into 4X4 'mode' Check this, although it is rear wheel drive. http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=287766100&dealer_id=55101869&car_year=2004&make_desc=Dodge&search_type=used&distance=100&model_desc=Ram%201500%20Truck&first_record=26&position=top&origuri=/find/used-Dodge-Ram+1500+Truck-cars-for-sale-Detroit-48226.jsp&sort_type=priceASC&address=48226&pager.offset=25&cardist=119&standard=false&rdpage=thumb
I would buy one from a private party, not a used car dealer, IMHO. Do a search on cars.com and compare prices vs. miles and condition. Good luck!
You're on crack. This one, with the mileage, was probably a former rental. Rebuilt tranny? I'd steer clear. Rams on the other hand... nice, especially with the 5.7. Maybe you could spring for a newer Laramie? A buddy of mine has a loaded 2010 Laramie and it's seriously classy.
Thank you for all the great information guys. I was a bit embarrassed asking this question on FerrariChat. I passed on that truck. I am considering another truck that is identical to the black one, but with 130K. Thanks again! Chris
How is that unlikely? Almost every time my Chrysler goes in for service I have a 4x4 Ram (either SLT or Laramie) as a rental.
my dad had a jeep about ten years ago with 35X,XXX miles on I can't believe some body bought it...... I tend to unload my cars around 100,000 miles or just before seems like at that point its nothing but fix this fix that every couple of months.
Maybe it's a regional thing. I've tried to rent a 4x4 at times and found it almost impossible to find one.
i have a Tundra. My bro has a Dodge. We traded for a week. The Toyota feels like a well suspended car. Direct, accurate, no roll. The Dodge was hard to keep in one lane. No wonder those POSs are so cheap!
The Tundra (save for the newest one) drives like a jacked up version of my old 1999 Toyota Camry CE with the 2.2L 4-cylinder (299K, may it rest in peace). Plus, American trucks are only cheap because of fleet use.
I didn't say American. I think the Ford is very good, the Chevy not bad. It's the Dodge that a Three Coil Steamer. Made to a low price point, crap thru and thru.
Doesn't surprise me you couldn't get what you wanted. Repeat customer service didn't seem to be one of their strong points.
Thank you for all of your input. I purchased a truck two weeks ago. It's a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500. It was a work truck, but I love it. The body is extremely clean, and the interior even cleaner. I think I just turned 133,000 miles on it. My only two complaints are a reverse light that I can't fix and a large dent on the roof of the truck. The dent I am not worried about as nobody can see it and I can't see it from the inside of the truck. The reverse light bothers me though, as I purchased a replacement bulb and it still will not work. I am thinking the wiring has corroded or something along those lines. From the outside, the reverse section of the tail light has moisture in it and is very dirty looking while the other side is perfectly fine. I also notice no problems with the drive and handling. It's a truck. And a cheap one at that. I'm happy Anyways, thank you for all the input. I love my truck. The next step is a leveling kit and a set of 35" tires to fuel my inner redneck. Thanks again!
