Amalgam's can be found for sale on the secondary market most often in various auctions (I've been tracking those sales for several years), and occasionally with a few other specialist model dealers.

I agree with all that Antony wrote, and there is a lot more to this. Most people do not realize how involved and time consuming it is to make anything 3D printed. And as for the time it takes to print out parts... well, the better the finish and the larger the part = more and more time. As far as CAD modeling from scratch goes, it is often a good way to go, especially if you can't scan the car or item, but also greatly depends on how good the CAD modeller is as to how good or bad the actual part you finally print will be. And of course for many vintage cars of all types, there are no blueprints or any tech drawings available. So making a 3D model from scratch can be much the same as a model maker creating a scratch built model by hand. Some are fantastic, and some are inaccurate toys.

What model did they give Kimi ?

Whatever it is not sure I like the unpainted, stone statue like finish.

    Interesting.

I just commissioned Amalgam to reproduce my Pur Sang Bugatti type 35B in 1:8 scale . It’ll actually be a 35T under the hood, but from the outside it’ll be identical to my car.

    I don’t plan on selling.

Once again a 1:8 Amalgam sells for far less than originally sold for retail. (Ferrari 250 GTO). Although it could in some ways be considered as having sold well it really did not... someone certainly got an expensive haircut. Amalgam's price is $19,995. and the model in question just sold a day ago for only half that amount at $10,000.

If I remember correctly these went for around $5k-$7k back in the day. Their prices really skyrocketed once they were bought out.

Yes they were in $5K-$7K price range many years ago, but have continued to increase substantially. The company has also had backers investors for many years now (I think 3 or 4 different people), price increase was not from just the backers or those who bought the business. The edition quantity sizes are just too big and IMO heavily overpriced. I'm speaking from my point of being a collector, and specialist mfg. & dealer in this business since long before Amalgam ever came to be. Some of their model editions that were originally produced long ago are still available. One of several examples is their Mercedes-Benz W196 Streamliner... edition of "only" 196 pieces, originally offered/produced/available well over 20 years ago is still available today!! But of course at a much higher price...$20,030.

    Oh I agree with you.

I'm a big fan of their work but they pushed their pricing too far IMO. Even my good friend who is a major collector stopped buying them due to pricing. I own just one (a P3/4) but I could never afford the new pricing.

I agree. I started a Ferrari 1:8 supercar collection years ago. My intention was to add the F50 and the LaFerrari Aperta to the collection, but the pricing got away from me. So, they lost me as a good client. Obviously I don’t know their business model or challenges, but on the the surface, the law of supply and demand doesn’t seem to support their pricing given that you can still by all the supercar models today, and they are supposed to be a limited number.

Yes, I believe the pricing got away from many buyers. Regarding all of their "limited editions" ...the numbers just don't work, and have not made any good business or fiscal sense for years now.

I remember seeing your Amalgam supercar collection and it's a real shame it hasn't been continued on due to crazy pricing buddy.

This concept of things being a limited edition to justify ridiculous prices really gets me annoyed.

Firstly they are man made (not dinosaur bones) so they can set the amount made at what ever figure they want, usually enough to satisfy world wide demand and then some. Especially at their prices there are only a certain number of fans that can afford to spend that money on a model car whether they would love one or not.

Then there's the problem of storing or displaying such large scale models. Choosing a place that's safe and out of direct sunlight.

Finally if you want to sell one good luck finding a buyer to ante up the above retail asking price and then if the model needs to be shipped the cost of postage and the risk of damage is both very high.

I'll stick to my high end 1/18th CMC models. Relatively low cost, easy to display, metal, excellent quality (with a few exceptions) and should I wish to sell it nearly every discontinued model whether limited in edition or not has genuinely gone one up with achievable second hand prices.

Yeah I'd love to pick up a used copy of the the 1:4 scale Daytona SP3 engine in about ten years or so. :)

It's fun to see Amalgam models come up on the secondary market. Not always easy to find but they are out there.

reviloclassicmodels.co.uk are selling some new 1:8 Amalgam models at a substantial discount compared to the retail prices charged by Amalgam. One of these discounted ones happens to be the 1:8 Ferrari Daytona SP3, $18,090.00 from Amalgam, now advertised for $14,445.00 from Revilo. I got mine a few months back for only $12,000.00 from Revilo, and with no waiting (shipped on order). And the shipping & customs charges were low, only a few hundred $US from Amalgam to the USA. This is one of the new Amalgams with open doors and engine cover. A great model. And there are probably other retailers offering similar discounts on in-production Amalgams.
