Yup, it's amazing how quickly that database of video blew up. Site's like YouTube are the future of media.

    youtube certainly changes the game-

I've been a little hesitant to watch anything F1 after i saw a compilation of F1 fatalities on that I have been unable to erase from my memory since. It has a lot of footage I'm sure was editted in rebroadcasts. Has anyone else seen this? I'm sure I can dig it up if anyone feels inclined to watch it. Maybe a few others could watch it and we could start an internet support group.

I've seen it... don't dig it up. You can find all kinds of gore on the net these days.

I knew my good friends on ferrarichat would have seen this. Yeah I'm not a fan of the gore you can find online- that stuff seems to have an indellible effect on me. Everyone has that friend of co-worker that seems to love that kind of stuff- I do my best to avoid it. I didn't expect to see what I saw on youtube- as I assumed most of their content is filtered and monitored by other users- and this footage all came from television broadcasts- but I was wrong.
It did give me new found respect for the drivers- especially from decades past. Imagine seeing this stuff than having to continue racing that same day or the next week. What other sport has 5% of their athletes perish in a season. And people think fotball is brutal.

Neither am I (a fan of gore), but it's there, if you choose it, I didn't.

I was just amazed at the compilations from the early 70s' thru the 80's.
I think the last time I really looked at video on the internet, Youtube didn't exist, and neither did Google video.

The hilights from those GP's from 1971-73 bring back a lot of memories.
Lots of vintage F1, no vintage Can/Am stuff, except for vintage racing itself.

I thought I was the only one that regretted watching the F1 fatalities....I thought it was a compilation of tv edited stuff that I had previously seen. It ended up fouling my mood for a couple of days. My advice is kick your curiousity in the crotch and avoid it.

Youtube however is pretty cool...all those onboard shots that previously were almost impossible to find.

I've seen that Villeneuve/Arnoux video countless times (never tire of it!). Has anyone seen any follow-up video? Like the cool-down lap, getting out of the cars or the podium? I know both drivers enjoyed the duel, but it would be cool to see their immediate reactions.

It seems like there are about 20 Senna 'Tribute' videos, there is one that just gives me chills, to the point of getting tears in my eyes.
They spend all of the video on him that infamous weekend, they really spend most of the time focused on his hands, his face, his eyes, and you can just tell he really didn't want to be there, that his mind just wasn't 'into it' that whole weekend after Ratzenburger's crash..........

I can't say I have been around Senna up-close and personal too much, but I was VERY close to him in Detroit for 5 years, and I never saw him like that before, it was just eery.

How were you close to Senna in Detroit for 5 years? Just curious? Sounds very interesting.
Its nice to have a few people to confide in regarding the fatalities video- i don't know if you guys have seen the one with the track marshall - for those that have you know what I am talking about. I wanted to take a rohipinol after watching that video.

Right next to him, 6-8 feet away sometimes.
I didn't hound or chase him around specifically, there was always more than just one driver in the pits and paddock, but in 1984 when he was there in the Toleman 'nobody' in the american press really knew who he was, so he was largely ignored. Seems everyone was chasing Lauda and Piquet around.
I knew who Senna was, and his exploits from F3 in Europe, and I told my friend that was there with me: 'Man, this guy is going places.......'.

My friend sat/leaned up on the pit wall seperating the pits from the track and talked to him for about 20 minutes, I wandered up and down the pits doing other things. Then my friend proceeded to go yak with Nigel Mansell for quite a long time...... and my friend wasn't too familiar with F1 back then at all.
But from '85 on it was different - by then the press knew who he was, they hounded him, I just kinda stayed back and observed...

This was back when you could actually get an all-access pass (with a little finagling), AND the drivers would actually talk to you.

I have a friend that is scanning in some pics I did, hopefully one of these days I will have them up on my website.

If by track marshal incident you mean the Tom Pryce incident, yeah, I've seen it once, and don't care to see it again, same with the Roger Williamson one, it brings tears to my eyes to see a driver doing everything he can to get a driver out of a burning car, but can't do it....... I feel so bad for Wiliamson and Purley.

wow - that must have been amazing- and also must have made his death that much harder for you. Being an F1 fan in the US has its perks I suppose. I always imagine bumping into Shuey in Sedon, AZ (apparently he is big fan of the sw lifestyle) and no one else knowing who he is- haning out with him and Corina and me and my girlfriend.

Anways- I think we are thinking about the same incicent- where the marshall got hit crossing the track to help the guy get out of his burning car- which they proceed to show again in slow motion. I'm assuming the driver and the marshall met their maker that day. As the footage became progressively better- it became harder and harder to watch. The black and white stuff from the 50's seemed movie like. I couldn't even imiagine something like that in HD.

    Appreciate you retelling your experiences.
