The concept looked much better. This looks Japanese. Nice if it's a Japanese car, but not German, not for that price tag and definitely not with a V bloody 6.

I don't know what to think of it... Nothing about its looks jumps out at me like "HOLY CRAP". I will wait till I see it in person to pass a good judgment.

Is has a 1,000+ HP Formula 1 power train that revs to over 11,000 RPM.. How is that not exotic enough for you? I swear, sometimes I think people complain just to complain.

I am pasting something I wrote to a friend this morning:

Ferrari is really the best at taking technology from F1 and translating it to the road. Often it means not a literal, full resolution translation. I think that's what Marc and Aston are trying here and I think it only highlights the shortcomings of such an approach.

I think this makes the case even stronger for cars such as the LF, 918 and P1.

Clearly the calling card for this and the Red Bull Aaron car is direct transfer of F1 technology. And yes it is very exciting.

But an F1 car is so different from a road car, I think these two cars just illustrated why the "big 3" make so much more sense.

F1 cars are so reliant on aerodynamic grip, aka downforce, they only begin to work at high speeds. I remember a journalist trying out an F1 car. He thought he was a pretty good driver. He was in tears- it was so different and so difficult. He did get it going. But he was reduced to tears. If this happens to a journalist, what about your typical supercar buyer. You just met several of them in Portofino...

I have mixed reactions on both Mercedes and Aston Red Bull cars. It's actually a case of opposite reactions. I think the styling of the Aston is more interesting but I wonder about the technology more than the Mercedes. With the Mercedes I don't doubt the technological package but the styling, while not offensive, leaves me cold. It looks an awful lot like a 1980s/ 1990s LeMans car to me. Maybe that's the point but I think there is zero artistry. Even the P1 and 918 have some artistry in their shapes. And the LF is really a beautiful shape that captures the imagination.

Of course, those with all 3 have 2 new cars to go buy... I think that's the business case for these cars. But, I am sure very much not to your surprise, if I had the money I'd have the LF, and if I had the money for all of them, I think I'd jump to the LF Aperta.

I disagree and the secret is actually in a combination of weight and downforce. The extreme downforce is required because they are lightened to such an extent for the efficiency and consumables, it does not translate to a road car appropriately demonstrated by the GT-R which packs supercar handling prowess from engineering and not marketing.

Here, Mizuno explains the effect of weight, grip, and downforce on the AWD platform and how this is translated into a design philosophy at odds with traditional motorist thinking.

I loved mine and sold it for cars with more sensory experience. It was almost too easy to drive fast, something like the Project 1 is going to with some crazy hyper car elements and an exotic power plant thrown in. If there is one thing that MB can be counted on to do is over engineer it and that's what makes it special from the big three.

    You don't think Porsche "over-engineered" the 918? :)

I don't think the Valkyrie and Project One can be compared to the LaF/P1/918. Technology has already advanced since those three were made. Based on what I've seen of the five, the LaF/P1/918 seem far more practical and usable around town unlike the Valkyrie and Project One. Those two come off as concept cars that customers can buy and look at it.

I've said it in other threads, but the Valkyrie is the most interesting to me. The design is like no other road car and the thing is basically an LMP car for the road...and the icing on the cake is that it uses a n/a V12.

I think thats a valid point. I guess we see the top tier cars and want to compare them. Lets face it, the people buying these probably already have the others as well as Bugatti etc.

    None of these are "practical".

But if you want gonzo I'd hold out for a Valkyrie.

I didn't say they were practical, but rather more practical than the Project One/Valkyrie. They are road cars designed for the street...not concept LMP cars with added parts to make them street legal (and only in certain countries). The P1/918/LaF can and do get used on streets without issue...I don't see that happening with the Valkyrie and Project One.

I think they invested the right amount of engineering. MB usually over-engineers things and it's not always a positive, just something you can count on! heh.

Do you think this because the new cars look so much like concept LMP type cars? I think these new ones are at least designed to be street legal. I have a feeling their fortunate owners will drive them about as much as those with the other big name cars we've been discussing.

Good point. Once I discovered our SL55 AMG had two batteries! On one hand a positive, on the other hand, something else to be concerned with...

The Project One and Valkyrie look like LMP cars and they even have a driving position that is recumbent. The bodywork of the Valkyrie is pretty extreme compared to other road cars and it will be an incredibly light weight car. They say it will be 2,270lbs while the LMP cars are just under 2,000. You have to be small to fit in them based on images and video and I can't see them being used as much as 918s and p1s are. LaFs seem to be kept as garage queens regardless.
