i wasn't going to say anything about this until i had a chance to do a complete write-up and post it that way, but i can't think; i try to write and my words are jumbled, i'm so consumed by this burning lust, it keeps me up night, it distracts me during the day, it's unreal...

Last week, i had the awesome opportunity to drive a Ferrari...

i now know what it's like to ride in old racecars, both Ferrari and non-Ferrari; i know what it's like to ride in and drive 80's Ferraris, 90's Ferraris and 21st Century Ferraris, the most recent being Darth's 550 Maranello...

The 550 Maranello is, by far, the fastest car i've EVER driven... To shamelessly snag someone else's quote, 'the acceleration is massive'... It was incredible... Even at low third gear, i stepped on the gas and the car just seemed to PUSH everything in my rearview mirror back further... It was incredible... i was in awe, to say the least...

But this is not going where you think it is... My latest chance to drive one of Ferraris masterpieces has just increased this burning lust in me, for an NNO... Go ahead, laugh at my over enthusiastic depravity; my perverse and zealous pursuit of a very foggy dream - hell, i laugh at it, myself, sometimes...

But i'm being serious... i can't begin to count the sleepless nights and fragmented days i've lived because of thoughts of this car... i don't think i'm obsessed with it, but damn me if i'm not teetering on that very thin line...

The first ride i ever got in a Ferrari was in a 550, so i was always aware of the endless power of the Maranello; until last week, the first hand knowledge of being in that cockpit was always one step ahead of me... But driving one hasn't increased my desire to own a 550 (and i'd LOVE to own one), rather it's fueled this conflagration of raging flames of pure, unadulterated lust for an NNO...

    ...a black one. :)

i also got another ride in an NNO only two days before driving Darth's Maranello (something else i wasn't going to mention until i had a chance to do a write-up on it), so maybe that has something to do with it...

Either way, i'm engulfed by the very thought of an NNO... It's almost mind-numbing... How can i not wonder "if Ferrari can make a car as powerful as the Maranello... what can NNO be like...?"

Thoughts and dreams of driving one are scattered in my head like litter strewn about a NY street...

    ...anyone else have this problem...?

    NNO,

I too am infected with the Ferrari virus. I think they call it "The Sickness" here. It has in a small way driven the course of my life. When I was younger I worked at an auto museum and an ex-dealer just to be near Ferraris. I was always working towards one goal: Ownership. Then it happened. I bought the TR. I thought it would be like Christmas. But it wasn't. The car was everything I thought it would be, but the hunt was over. The goal had been achieved. I suffered from buyers remorse for days. Wondering what I would do now that I had the car I always wanted. I didnt even want to drive it. Then I realized that even though I had attained my goal, and bought a Ferrari, There were always other Ferraris to buy. Newer, faster more expensive Ferraris. The bar can always be raised. The sickness has only gotten worse since I bought the car. Thank god I found this place..... Its medicine.

After being somewhat of a lurker, i feel for you Carbon.
If theres anybody out there that deserved an NNO, anybody that would treat it right, anybody that drove it right, it would be you Carb.
I enjoy reading about your enthusiasim and i hope that your dreams are realised one day. If i was crazy rich and had too much money to spend, a Black NNO would be in your driveway dude!

My 512TR is about even with a 550 so I know what you are referring to. Now an F40, thats another story my friend :) Thats a quantum leap above a 512TR or a 550. Its a friggin full liter crotch rocket with 4 wheels attached.

Carbon, I'm glad that you're getting to drive some more Ferraris. (I'm guessing that this was Darth's car?)

Here's what a friend of mine said in a recent email --

This comment comes from a guy who has owned multiple 275 4-Cam GTBs, Daytonas, 3x8s, and who has a Porsche GT waiting in the wings.

The truth is that we don't need any more horsepower in our street cars. Bragging about 0-60 times is for the Alanlambo crowd. Hell, I just got a street legal Spec Miata, and it is almost as much fun as the Shark. (Note I said almost.)

Do I lust after an Enzo? Nope. I'm a driver not a lover. Unless I discover that I have an uncle who works at Google, the odds of me being able to afford a $1M+ car are slim and next to none. I only lust after cars that I have a realistic expectation of buying. Indeed, I don't even like to drive cars that I can't afford. For me, worrying about damaging the car takes the fun out of it.

But WTH, go ahead keep your dreams. I'll stay out of your way by dreaming about a 275 4-Cam GTB.

It's not a problem, NNO, it's a pleasure. If I buy mine first, we'll go for a spin. Promise.

But until then, tell me how the Enzo sounds. I've seen video clips, but of course nothing's like the flesh.

    Forza,

    Cavallini

P.S. You certainly enjoy writing, it seems. You should write your way to an Enzo.

i'm smiling calmly, but on the inside, i'm jumping up and down... Thank you... :)

Cavallini, check this thread for my description on how it sounds... Note: the word 'road' is supposed to be roar; a typo on my part...

At this point, i don't know if it's a joy of writing as much as it is me just liking to hear myself... :D
If i thought i could write my way to an NNO, i would... At this point, though, i think i'm going backwards, in that regard...

K5, i don't have anything in my inbox from you...

Dale, yes, it was Darth's car... i know an NNO seems very out of reach right now, but i WILL have one, one day... A real one, not a 1:18 model, not a replica, i will own my own NNO one day... :)

Every writer must enjoy his/her own voice. That's an important start. From there, you master the craft, just like driving an Enzo. There is a great deal to learn and even more to develop, especially for fiction. I highly recommend the effort, especially since you sound young with few responsibilities other than your own skin.

Think about it. Buy a book or two on prose and fiction writing, the first being "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and White. It's THE classic.

    Forza,

Dude i dont even know you but reading about your passion and feelings for the car really move me. It seems to me like that the NNO is not a purchase of a car for you, but more buying a part of you that was supposed to have been there from the start. I really hope that you get there asap.

I know he will. Hopefully i'll have an F-Car by then.....
But im nowhere near as passionate about it as NNO is. Thats what sets him apart from most non-owners.

Mike, thank you very much, i really appreciate the words of encouragement... You're spot on with your observation... The NNO is so much more than just a 'car' to me - it's so much more than just a 'car', period... It's the most amazing car i've ever seen... It's so unbelieveably, flawlessly gorgeous... i can only imagine what it must be like to drive it, hours on end, only stopping for gas, totally oblivious to whatever's going on in the world... Just me, the car and the road... Those thoughts literally keep me up, EVERY night... Literally.

    Thank you, VROOM...

Cavallini, that sounds interesting, i'll try to check it out... Thanks... :)

Exactly, I beleive if you want something bad enough you will get it. You will do whatever it takes and get it. From what I understand NNO is just nuts for that car. For gods sake, he doesnt sleep at night because he thinks about the car. I really hope you get it NNO., then give me a ride for beleiving in you.=)

    Wish i had that opportunity!

Carbon, alot of people out there in the world would probably laugh at the way you feel about the NNO. The way you can't sleep at night. The way your life is transformed by a "car". But seriosuly dude, i'm not laughing. I'm giving you respect. I wish i could feel as strong about something like you do with the NNO.

Thank you, Mike; i appreciate that...

Dave, don't tempt me... A plane ticket and room and board are well worth it... i've never done heroin before, but from the descriptions i've heard, the immediate addiction to the Maranello MUST be similar... From the very first time i hit that gas pedal the car just LUNGED forward, i knew i was hooked... It's like everything outside of the car and me were being thrust backward and the 550 was the only thing not only NOT being thrust backward, but rather, being pushed forward... The exhilarating power is almost more than what should be legal... The ease in which i shrunk everything in the rearview mirror was more of a high than any narcotic could produce... When Mark was right behind me and i said, "C'mon, Mark, get off my ass..." and brushed my foot against the gas, i was IMMEDIATELY a block ahead of him; near instantaneous... Snap your fingers, it was just like that - except with cooler sound... :)

But see, that right there is the entire point of my post... If the Maranello is that powerful, i can only imagine what the NNO is like...

i remember the very first time i drove Bruce's Testarossa... i was nervous and very unfamiliar with the car... However, after driving it pretty much every weekend that i was at his house, i began adjusting the car... Granted, i'm not nearly as familiar with the car as Bruce & Andrea are, but i know it better than any other Ferrari i've ever driven...

So i take that same experience and apply the what-if scenario to the NNO... Driving one for the first time must be unbelieveable... Frightening, maybe, but still so thrilling and amazing... But how much MORE fun must it be after you've begun familiarizing yourself with it...? i can only wonder... Lay awake at night and wonder...

    I see what your saying.
Picture this situation that has happened to me.
My boss somehow organised to have an NNO out at a track on the outskirts of Sydney a while ago. It was one of the few in Australia. I was sitting in it and the owner was driving it. We were on the straight. The straight's long. I mean, race cars hit 290KM/HR on this straight, and here i am doing 80km/hr in the NNO down the straight, with the annoying owner refusing to "punch" it. Annoying?? NO. It hurt me.....

The owner was a bit of a loser. No photos of it. NO DRIVING (I understand that) and virtually no enjoyment.
    Can you imagine that?
Thank god he has moved back to the UK.....

    LOL...

As you mentioned, i can understand about him not letting anyone drive it; i think it's wonderful that he gave you a ride... But no pictures...? Wtf...? 80km...? That's like, what, 65 mph...? Wtf...? On a track...? Was the engine cold...? Was he nervous...? You said you were on a straight, right...? The car needs to be opened up... Driven... i don't understand that... How'd he get one in the first place...?

I was thankful for the experience, IMO it was great just to be in one. But seriously, i felt like candy was being dangled in front of me and i was the kid! Yeah, no pictures. The engine was warm. And he could have been nervous. He got the car through Ferrari. I remember it because he bragged heaps that he went over to get seat fitted. He was a bit of a jerk. He's owned other F-Cars (F40-F50-360 etc...). He wanted to keep the NNO secret because it was too much of a "liability". Jerk..........

I wasnt dissapointed, i was hurt. It sucked.
I felt like punching his leg so his foot would floor it so i could get a feeling for her. But i wouldnt do that. I respected his car but all i can say is that i was hurt.

    i hear you, buddy...

LOL, i did that to my uncle years ago...! He was only driving a Chevy Cavalier Z24, but we were on the highway and a Ferrari passed by us and i vehemently urged him to catch up to it so i could see it and, just to bust my balls, he wouldn't speed up, so, because there's nothing under the dash or the console, i moved my foot over towards the pedals and pressed down on his foot, accelerating the car... He kept yelling "Stop! Stop...!!!" but i held it there until he was at about 80-85... We never caught the Ferrari, but he never broke my balls just to break them, after that... :)
