Okay, I watched almost every race in 2005 but I'm still pretty clueless about Formula 1. I don't read F1 news sites on a daily basis because alot of it seems to be just rumors and misinformation. I catch snippets here and there and I think I am starting to get a handle on what's going on, but this is one of the hardest sports to follow, IMO.

The following is what I understand to be the differences in 2005 vs. 2006, pieced together from a few different sources. How did I do? Please correct me if I don't have something right. Did I miss any of the major story lines?

    Ferrari
-Ferrari are running their new V8 engines
-Michael Schumacher has not said whether or not this will be his last season.
-Rubens Barrichello has been replaced by Fillipe Massa, who left Sauber. Barichello is driving for Honda this season.

    Renault
-Renault are running their new V8 engines
-Alonso and Fisi are still with Renault for the 2006 season, but Alonso has already signed a contract to race for McLaren for 2007.

    McLaren
-McLaren are running their new Mercedes V8 engines
-Raikkonen and Montoya are back, but Raikkonen’s contract expires after this year

    Williams
-Now running Cosworth V8s, since BMW is now partnered with Sauber.
-Webber is back, Heidfeld replaced by rookie Nico Rosberg

    Honda
-BAR is no more. Now it’s just Honda F1
    -Running their new V8 engines
-Button remains, Barrichello replaced Sato, who joined Super Aguri F1.

    BMW Sauber
-BMW left their partnership with Williams, and bought the Sauber team.
    -Running new BMW V8 engines
    - Villeneuve returns and Heidfeld replaces Massa.

    Toyota
    -Running new Toyota V8 engines
-No changes to driver lineup, still Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli.

    Midland
-Formerly Jordan F1, bought by Russians.
    -Running new Toyota V8 engines

    Red Bull
    -Formerly Jaguar in 2004
-I thought they ran Ferrari engines last year, am I mistaken? Formula1.com says they ran cosworths last year. At any rate, they are running Ferrari V8s this year.
-No changes to driver lineup, Coulthard and Klein return.

    Toro Rosso
-Red Bull bought Minardi and is fielding a second team
-They are running a detuned Cosworth V10
-Liuzzi was a part-time driver last year with Red Bull, this is his first year with a full time seat
-Scott Speed is the first American F1 driver since Michael Andretti. And there was much rejoicing.

    Super Aguri
-New Japanese team, running Honda V8’s
    - Sato joins after being at Honda last year. Was he ****-canned from Honda or did he leave them?
-Ide is a little old to be an F1 rookie but he’s Japanese, and that’s all that matters.

    In general, some other changes....

    Tire changes are back (right?)???

Qualifying has changed. Instead of everyone doing 2 hot laps and taking the sum of the 2 as the qualifying time, they are running a "knockout" system. At the start of qualifying, all cars are on the track doing hot laps. They can come and go from the track just like they used to be able to, but only the top 17 finishers move on to the 2nd 15 minute session. The bottom 5 drop out. In the next session, the bottom 5 again drop out, and again in the 3rd session. In the last 15 minute session, the finishing order sets the order of the top grid spots.

After each session the cars are allowed to refuel, EXCEPT the last session (is that right?). So if you are a slow poke who expects to drop out after the first session, and you want to start heavy with fuel, you better gas up! On the other hand, if you are confident of your ability to make it to the subsequent session, you can run light fuel and have an advantage. This could bite you in the actual race however because if you go light on fuel and something happens and you get knocked out, you are basically screwed and have to start the race light on fuel and will have to stop early.

There is still Park Ferme or whatever so you can't make changes to the car. What happens if the car breaks during qualifying? Does your best lap to that point count or do you automatically go to last in that session? What if you blow an engine - can you change it and go to the back like before?
