You guys may not care about this but, I thought it was somewhat interesting if nothing else, a good example of anal trivia. When I was doing research a few years ago on 355 challenge cars(before I bought my '97) I was looking at the VIN numbers of the factory built '97-'98(to see if they had Euro nos. or not) cars that were for sale at the time. There is a break down of the 17 digit VIN, each digit has its own meaning ie; 1st one is country of orgin "Z"=Italy, 2nd is Marque "F"=Ferrari, 8th digit is for market sold in ("A"= No. Amer.)and moving down to the 10th digit, its for year built and so on. Anyway the 4th digit is for engine type, on '95 355s it is a "P" for 2.7 motronic and 96-99 355s it is a "X" for 5.2 motonic. What I found different about my '97 355C is that the 4th digit should be a P because the engine management system in '97-'98 challenge cars is the 2.7 motronic from the '95 car vs. the 5.2 motronic that is in all '96-99 cars. But my '97 355's VINs 4th digit is an X which would signify a 5.2 motronic system. So I'm assuming all of the challenge cars that are '97-'98MY have the incorrect 4th letter in their VINs. There you have it a good question for a Ferrari trivia game. Regards, Vern

    Vern,
I believe you are experiencing a bit of cabin fever up there in Kalispell. Let me know if you and your family need some rations and I'll ship them out to you on the next stagecoach out of Billings.
    Take care

    Vern...

Go to www.red-headed.com, click on the little picture of the Testarossa... Then click on articles, then go all the way to the bottom of the page, then click on Decoding the VIN, under Other Ferrari Subjects... If you enjoyed examining your own VIN, you'll certainly enjoy that site...

Yourself? I would say that would definitley cure some of your boredom. I like to think I am pretty mechanically inclined, but not sure I want to do the engine out myself. Good luck with that Vern, your a brave man.

Colby, Brave man, ah your makin' me blush, LOL. Really, its just therapy for me. IMHO part of the mystique of ownership of these cars is working on them. This will the first engine out 355 but 3rd time engine out Ferrari. Its great fun, you should try it. Crap, if I can do this anyone can. Regards, Vern
