    Ok, so I'm loping along in 3rd gear about 4,000 rpm - foot comes off the gas for a couple seconds anticipating a stop for a red light up ahead. Light goes green, I'm at about 3,800 rpm (still in 3rd) and I get on the go pedal pretty good - *BUT* the car is not picking up speed even though the revs go up as expected. This 'suspended acceleration' effect lasted maybe 2 seconds and then the car begins picking up speed again.

    Later, the car did it again on the freeway in 4th gear, same revs, etc.

    I consider myself very in-tune with the car's normal noises and behaviors & I've never noticed this before. Any ideas what is going on?

    PS Car is a 95 355.

    Sounds like your clutch is slipping. Did you notice a burning smell when it happened?

    Clutch is gone, I'm getting my clutch done next week. Alot people recommend that when doing your clutch you replace the OEM throw out bearing with a Hill Engineering part. Ricambi carriers them.

    Good luck with the repairs.

    No funny smells. I think this literally just started so it'll probably be some time before I find myself stranded (hopefully in 2nd gear...b/c as my Dad says, "2nd gear'll get you home").

    Thanks for the offer to mess up Eric's driveway...I just may take you up on the generosity. I imagine the entry fee is a case of Molson Canadian? :D

    I agree with the clutch diagnosis. Classic symptoms. As long as the throw out bearing and pressure plate don't fail, you'll still be able to shift.

    Over time, you'll be able to transmit less and less power to the wheels before slippage occurs. Back off the throttle immediately when you feel this, then get back into the throttle softly and the clutch will hook-up again (analogous to spinning tires). You want to minimize the amount of time when the clutch is slipping. The remaining clutch material will go away fast if you drive it hard. Also, when it's actively slipping, the pressure plate and flywheel will experience rapid wear and heat as well. I would keep driving to a minimum until it's sorted. For now, it sounds like if you keep the RPMs below 3800 and stay out of the throttle, it's not slipping at all though, so not causing much additional wear.

    There are only two possibilities: 1) tires are spinning on the road, 2) clutch is gone.

    Its easy to determine which.

    First, hats off to Plugzit and 3forty8 for guiding me through my first clutch job. I'm officially a Stooge Apprentice now. :D

    Wow, what an education I got today and was an amazing amount of fun for me. There's no way in the world I would have tackled this job without their support...and for god's sake, Plugzit even had the exact part I needed.

    Can't be said enough about this forum ... such a fantastic resource and bunch of people willing to go out of their way to help. I'm tired, dirty and can't wipe the smile off my face. What a great day!

    Car drove like an absolute dream on the way home - wow, what a difference!

    Well done and congrats! What part of the clutch did you have to replace? I have my car booked for next week for a clutch job, it's suffering the same symptoms and they've quoted me a whole bunch of possibilities.

    The disc/plate in the 3rd pic is what was replaced. See the smooth finish ring around the metal core...the main culprit of the slipping. The outermost portion was pretty gone too - obvious when you have a newer one to compare it with.

    What a great way to spend the day - Rick was a real trooper and wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty and dig into his car. We have a new Stooge and anybody that brings a cooler full of beer to my place is always welcome to drop by! :D

    A huge thanks to Bruce for making the trek down to my place. Every moment with him is an education into how these cars work. The neighborhood kids got a real treat with all the Ferraris - a couple more pics of the fun:

    One question - does the rear bumper have to come off to access the clutch? Can the job be done without having to remove that bumper?

    I believe it has to come off, pretty sure you could not get the exhaust out if the bumper was still in place. If you don't get the exhaust out of the way, don't think you'll ever get the pumpkin off.

    The bumper is a PITA as well - there are 4 really long bolts that are a b!tch to get at. You also need to have an extra pair of hands/eyes to make sure you get the gaps right when putting the bumper back on or it'll look all wrong.

    Am jealous seeing Fowners working together. Have been a member for awhile and been surfing this forum for info. Nice to have a big brother eyeing your work giving tips. Gotta play all alone for now in my neck of the woods. Thanks for posting the pics. I'm not too far behind in needing clutch work.

    Mike, the bumper and muffler removal is an easier job on the 348 than the 355, but they do have to be removed to access the clutch. And as Rick said you will need a second pair of hands/eyes to re-install the bumper and get it aligned, or you can do it on your own with a floor jack to help support and align the bumper, but much easier with two people.

    Ask plugzit about his secondary muffler can delete mod :D I did it to my car and can remove the clutch pumpkin without touching the bumper or exhaust - but the best part is it sounds better and drops about 35 pounds of weight off the back of the car! :)

    Well, there's what I told my wife to make myself look like a genius and justify a future lift purchase and then there's reality. :D

    I'm sure we'll get a few opinions on the topic. Research I did on here suggest that a clutch job could easily run northwards of $2,500.
