So I finished pulling the pan and front cover. I ended up strapping the frame to my cradle and it was tight. I had to use a BFH to get the cross brace down.

I was very happy to see the ball bearing instead of the needle which I think means the TSB was performed. However, that excitement was halted when I saw the orientation of the bearing. Good thing the PO took the car to a "professional."

I need to call SRI tomorrow and I'll be able to start putting it back together when the parts come.

    Nice job with the strap.

What's the SKF part number on the bearing in the front cover?

I think it's SS1B631126A. The 631126A is correct. It could be SS1S or a combination of Bs and Ss.

So it looks like it's BB1B, as it shows up with a Google search.

While you have the pan off be sure to replace the o-ring for oil galley running to the sump. Use one made out of Viton.

    Yup, that's the one.

I took my old o-ring to a hydralic shop and had them match it up with one made from Viton. Think it was like 25¢.

Great photos, mine needs to be done soon also, borrowed time.
I love the 348. You can drive it hard during the day and fix it at night.
Newer ones just don't have that.
I'll be watching your progress. Good luck.

I used VHT primer and paint. I'm looking for a light gray or silver wrinkle for the front covers. VHT seems to only have a dark gray wrinkle.

So it's been a while since I've been able to touch the car. I've been dealing with a very plump wife and she's not plump anymore as of 6/22. :) Our photographer had some fun with my 2nd son today who is all of 8 days old and then I got to play with the car a bit. She placed him on the engine cover that I have stored in my basement.

I received a package from SRI yesterday and got their cover bearing in today and the crank seal. The cover is ready to go, but I need to get the SRI tensioner pad and chains on first. I hope to have the cover and oil pan back on by the end of the week.

Love that pic of your baby. I wish I had the mechanical wherewithal to attempt this on my own. Fortunately I have access to a very good mechanic in the area. I'm probably going to be paying him for about 30 hours worth of work to do my major.

lol of course it will. Mechanics need to make a living too.

If I were to attempt the job, I'm confident I would get it done - I know I would learn a ton - and I'd probably spend 100 hours on it between sourcing parts, reading threads, watching YouTube, trips to auto parts store, and of course the actual work.

I will try smaller jobs myself I.e. O2 sensors, etc.

    Hi John,

Regarding the single black wire running to the starter motor that you had to cut. If this wire was connected to the starter motor solenoid spade connector, it is probably installed to by-pass the original wire which runs through a small 9-pin connector in the engine compartment on the left side looking from the back of the car and to the starter solenoid. If I remember well, the starter wire at the connector is white and thicker than the others. The problem is that the pins in the connector are quite small and are not quite to the task for the high amps of the white wire when the starter solenoid is energised. This plus corrosion over time may cause no-start i.e. turn key - nothing (like on my 348 soon after I bought it). As a temporary solution, I cut and brought out the white wires from both sides of the connector, attached male/female spade terminals an connected the wires to each other. I will later install a new similar but heavier duty 9-pin connector.

The cover bearing, 2 chains, and tensioner pad came from SRI. They all seem to be very well made.

Thanks for the info! I was hoping that SRI was offering those, but had not found them on the site.

BTW, how much time would you guess replacing those adds to the belt change?

I would guess it's at least 16-24 more hours, but YMMV. The parts from SRI aren't cheap either. So doing this extra step could be $3000 extra easily.

If my car came with service history dating back past the previous owner, I wouldn't have even done it this time. I would have waited until the next time I replaced the belt. The block bearing TSB was performed on my car, but I did not know that prior to taking it apart. My next belt change will probably not include these parts unless there is a problem.

Also, I probably didn't need to replace the chains, but I felt that while I had it all apart, it's was worth the extra money.

    +1

While it's out, may as well do it all properly and then you will be right for another 20+ years. :)
