    Rotten luck, my sympathies

Modern paint matching equipment and computer color analysis can account for fade, OP, and a lot of other factors so that it really comes out well. A color match should not be that difficult and I hope you're pleasantly surprised at the results.

    Dave,

It really doesn't look that bad. You should have access to the rear of the damage to push the surface out. I would minimise the repair once the surface is back to its correct contour then build up the paint then color sand down then polish. This is an advantage with solid pigment. With paint matched you should not be able to tell. Do you still have some of the paint or is it original paint? By painting more than you have to you will risk the panel color matching in relation to the surrounding panels over time no matter how well the paint is matched plus there is no panel line to blend out to. you're very lucky your headlamps weren't touched. This is good time to add headlamp covers .

25 year old paint. Headlamp covers will automatically fail inspection in PA, which I have to do once a year, despite the classic plate. Also, not sure I like the covers.

The guys at Cavallo will be able to fix it right. Unfortunately, it also pushed in the panel next to the front hood. HArd to see in the picture, but about 1 8-10" dent there, too.

I'll know and report back later today.

    Dave,

What about taking advantage of having to do some paintwork and convert to Euro marker lamps? Headlamp covers are simple to take off (minutes)for inspection. The design in my opinion becomes more complete and cohesive with them. It is more pure. It is a subjective opinion.

I've always thought the headlight covers make a Dino even more striking than it already is. It sort of finishes the entire look. One of the very few ways you can actually improve the original appearance of any Ferrari.

The truth is unlike those that don't understand auto painting and candy coat a false perception the car can be fixed to the condition before the incident is the car will never be the same, you will have filler in the damaged areas that can potentially cause problems from different materials trying to stick to each other, also moisture, rust, or separation of the filler from the metal down the road along with problems matching old laquer or enamel paint which will be very difficult and the need to blend the fender. Even if they get a good match now a few years down the road the regular paint will fade at a different rate than the new repair or just the opposite so where it was fixed it will be very noticeable, you better strip and re-paint the whole car.

    Hmmm..

    Round one. DING!!!

The insurance guy covers up. He's thinking, "Rope-a-dope".

The owner advances, his plan, "Dance until the insurance guy tires." (Or, for you Brits, tyres.)

The insurance guy says, "We'll have to subrogate!" Owner counters, "To whom? I own both cars, it's like suing myself, you can't do that."

In dances the referee, Cavallo who says, "Don't care who's paying, but it's gonna need the whole front clip at a minimum, resprayed. And to do that, there's gonna be lots of work, and, it probably won't match exactly. So, in order to avoid diminished value, I'm thinking a whole new paint job!!"

Insurance guy staggers to his corner, dazed, but still comes back swinging. "Maybe we can pay for the front clip, but a whole paint job, no way!!"

I move in, taunting, "Diminished value, diminished value!"

DING!!! End of round one. No clear winner, but the insuracne guy is back on his heels taking body shots left and right.

Round two tomorrow or Wednesday when the insurance guy comes out to see the car, and gets off the notion that this can be solved over the phone.

    Stay tuned,

    Dave

    Pictures??? Certainly worth considering.

But again, if I add the Euro do-dads, should I ever consider concours, I shoot myself in the foot, don't I?

It wouldn't quite be like that, it would be more like your classic auto insurer subrogating against either your "regular car" insurer, or your detailer's insurer. It's up to the classic ins. co. to decide which company they have the best chance of successfully subrogating against.

Bummer about the car. I hope it all gets worked out. Get them to pay to paint the entire car if you can. It's the least they can do for you. Pain and suffering.

    OMG!

What happened to the Land Rover?

Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously, a good shop will be able to fix and match that. I have seen similar things and accidents with some of the Ferraris in our town. We thought it would never match, but you can't tell the difference.

"Subrogating"? I'm learning a new word. Sounds dirty.

I'll try to work it into conversation at dinner tonight.

"Jenny, when you go in your room with your sister and lock the door, I worry you two might be subrogating."

In the end, did you have to pay for the detail?

So sorry for your misfortune Dave.

With regard to your MV inspections... Dont know abt PA, but here in Jersey, we have a few types of registrations like Classic, Antique, and Collectible catagories which ELIMINATE the need for annual or bi-annual safety inspections.

Nah, another $60k or so to go to get there.

Paint will only be a minor haircut for the insurance guy, and hopefully in the end, the detailer. Who, FD, had no friggin insurance. H.S. Kid, remember?

    Oh well, onward and upward.

Oh, DD, I think you might subrogate your verbs in English class.

Tifosi - Rover is fine, busted a tail light.

Freeman, already wrote the check 1st thing in the morning before I went out. Probably should stop payment, eh? Didn't even think of that until now.

    Yes.

Leave it alone. Stock might "suck" to some people on this board, but it does result in the most points at concours.

Why are we talking new front clip??? ... am I missing the joke (has my hair turned blonde or something :D).

It's a minor issue ... get it fixed and most importantly keep the car on the road, don't waste your time with the car by confining it to a 2 year restoration just for this little ding.

Remember guys cars are about driving ... get it knocked out and squirt some paint on it and get back to that starting grid!
