    A little sewer problem?
Are the roots in the pipe under the house, too?

    You got my sympathy.

Roots are from the sidewalk all the way to the middle of the garage....

Why would a city Put a Tree 1 foot from the main plumbing line?

    Absolutely IDIOTIC!!!

And the city doesn't want to take the tree out!!

And I wanna take the city out :)

You know that all that digging around the roots can distress the tree and cause it to die.

Just thought you ought to know.

The operative word there is "city". "City planning" is a bit of an oxymoron.

    Terrible.

    Fer shure.

But look at it from the tree's perspective.

Tree's grunting out a living right in the middle of a bunch of concrete. Christ, can't even get a little water when it rains. It's tree-Somalia. Torture.

So Tree sends out root after root in a piteous effort to find water and some meager source of nitrogen.

Root hits a "rock", tracks along it a while, wedges between it and another closely fitting rock and all the sudden HOLY SH*T!!!! All the water and nitrogenous waste a dicotyledon could want! It's like walking into an air conditioned whore house. So Tree wedges every root within 20 feet into that pipe, drinking that sh*t. Too good to be true. Gulp, Gulp, Gulp.

    Until today.

Bad part--they are probably going to bill you for your garage mess. Local gov't is a trip... They put in pipe, they plant tree, you have problems because of them and you will pay the consequences in the long run. Never fails. The little guy always gets screwed...

just a possible FYI - I don't think the city planted the tree, you can't plant trees typically in an easement or right of way. It was probably the prior homeowner at one time or another w/out knowing

Make sure you tap (compact) the soils under your garage w/ layers of rock, sub-soils, sand and other geo-technical recomendations prior to repouring the concrete and patching....or you might find settlement cracks in the years to come.

right, you'll probably need to call a "tree doctor" if you want to save it. You won't see stress for possibly a year or two. The roots w/ Maples typically run parallel w/ the ground and not deep and as a general rule out from the trunk more or less as wide as the canopy. You might be finding roots too from trees that may have long since been cut down.

The trees were planted by the City, not the homeowner.
Almost every house in my neighborhood has or had a tree right smack dab in front of the house.
We had the tree removed and re cemented the sidewalk at my parents house, took literally an act of god to get them to remove it.
Now the only answer I get from the city is "we have no money'"
    Getting tired of eneryone's BullSh!t!

    I'm not bitter either

So they can't afford to pay a couple guys with chain saws to come cut down the tree (whole days work), but they pay these guys to tear your house up for 3 or 4 or 8 days...right.
