Looks like same team and style as 'Cars'. I might just like it. My excuse I can take Mia to see it. "Cars 2" in the air. I've been eagerly awaiting this thing for a while, I hope it is not a disappointment. It's been a great year for animation fun. (edit -- although if you think about it, the Cars world would be the most rigid, stratified environment ever. You are who you are from the moment you leave the factory, and no matter how hard it works, a forklift can never learn to fly)
I've been waiting for this too. My understanding is it got the green light because of positive reactions to the planes in "Cars 2." If I remember correctly, they are premiering it at EAA this year. Mark Edit: http://www.airventure.org/news/2013/130429_disneys-planes-set-to-take-off.html Yep, they're playing a sneak preview at EAA on Aug. 2nd.
That looks like a great movie and seeing it during the EAA would be awesome. Very cool seeing VF-84 represented. Too bad I'll be at RA for the 50th on the 2nd.
I am looking forward to taking my son to see this movie. The Canard in the movie is based on James Redmon's Berkut. Not too long ago, he was asked to do a series of flybys for sound recording for the movie. Very cool project carried out to a very high standard by one very dedicated guy. Must-Know Guide to Planes simplistic... few factual errors... interesting, though. Sadly, no Paul Newman voiceing in this one...
Don't be too quick to say that! In one of Pixar's short cartoons, Mater, the tow truck, does fly! So why couldn't a forklift?
I have very LOW expectations of this one. This is why Disney is screwing up Pixar. They're going back to sequel formula's and derivatives instead of being new and refreshing. I didn't like the movie "UP" very much but it was truly different and unique. This one seems like "crank it out" and sell lots of toys for Christmas while you're at it. Ratatouille is terrific. Who would have made a movie about a French Chef who's a rat? Only Pixar. Planes is beneath them -- but not beneath Disney who need to get some bucks back from the other misguided formula picture disaster: The Lone Ranger. After this: Trains. Then: Gondalas. Then Wheelchairs. Then Pogosticks. Then Sneakers followed by Trains 2.
Wow - we're in total agreement here. One difference - I LOVED "Up!". I'd say both "The Incredibles" and "Ratatouille" are probably in my top 10 all time favorite movies...brilliant stories both. I do believe Disney has something in the tank, but it's getting low. I noticed it with the Frog and Princess thing (I have daughters), that was weak. Especially considering how much better some of the other modern Princess movies were (Beauty and the Beast, Mulan). Not hopeful for this one. Cars was a solid movie, but I'm afraid this will bomb.
There are two audience segments. Kids, who will watch any cartoon format animation, and adults, who are looking for the envelope to be stretched. Kids command a lot of spending power, and that's who this is aimed at, along with some aviation buffs. I agree with you, but you are not the target audience for this one, unfortunately. I hope groundbreaking new stuff keeps coming out. This is not it, obviously. Put another way, there are groundbreaking, risky animations, and there are bread and butter (safe) animations.
There was a premiere of it at Oshkosh and I saw it with my 12 year-old. The good: a lot of aviation lingo (almost too much for the lay person), very good jokes for all ages, not dumbed-down. The bad: VERY predictable story line. You knew the ending in first 5 mins. My son loved it nonetheless, mainly for the aviation stuff not the plot.
It was okay. I hoped for better, but then again, they have set the bar so high for animated movies these days, it's hard to keep blowing audiences away. I didn't know Dane Cook was the voice of the main character, or I would have waited till it came out on video. Can't stand that guy's "comedy"
Certainly the worst judged and reviewed Pixar movie ever Planes - Rotten Tomatoes I'm telling you... this should have been a made for TV special on Disney Channel. Disney is screwing up Pixar.
I too saw it at Oshkosh and enjoyed it. True that the plot was very thin but the animation was first rate and Pixar movies always make me feel like a little kid.
Total agreement. I weep for what they are going to do to Star Wars.... You cannot make great movies by committee, just like the Japs found out you cant run an F1 team that way. It takes individual talent and genius.. Read Adrian Newey and George Lucas....
FYI - this is a Disney animated movie, NOT Pixar. It has the same art style as Cars, and is playing off of Cars, but it is not a Pixar animated or produced film. It was done by another Disney animation group. (thankfully).
Actually, it was supposed to be a direct-to-dvd movie, but at the last moment, they decided on a wide release. I read this in a few articles.
I saw "Planes" today, in 3D (which enhances the experience but is not essential). It is certainly fun to watch, but many of the characters are analogs of those in "Cars" or "Cars 2", and the plot is essentially a blend of that in those two movies, with a few situations that could only happen with airplanes. If you're a plane geek (like most of us who populate AviatorChat) or a parent with young kids, you'll appreciate "Planes"; everyone else (including, obvious, the movie critics) will probably find it tedious. (Incidentally, some of the trailers shown before the feature were in 3D as well. And note who did the voices of the two F-18s that have bit parts in the movie.)
