A friend is looking into a T. He would like to do 15k Kms a year ( +/- 10k miles ). How often do you have to change the belts and how much is that ? I assume all the rest is pretty standard ? He heard some crazy numbers like $25k per year to run one ! ( insurance, tax, service and fuel..). I cant believe it.
Please retract your question about how often do you need to belt change !!!! Can of worms - you should know better ! Belt change is engine out so expensive like a 348/355 - allow five grand and another thousand for the annual service For the mileage in Europe he'll use EUR 5000 petrol - insurance will be a couple of thousand more - sounds nearer ten thousand total
Isnt it safe to have the belt changed every 2/3 years or 20.000 kms ? That was my last impression. I figured that much as well for Petrol, insurance and regular service. Petrol = 5k Insurance = 2k Service = 1k Apparently there is a green tax in Germany = 1k Belt service ( 2k or 3k per year depending on how often ) Thats 11/12k per year. Not cheap but not that extravagant. Thanks !
Not a fair estimate as I drove my car roughly every 60-90 days in Las Vegas between April 2004 and July 2008. Car purcahsed at 29k mi (1 year and 500mi past first engine out service) for $42,500. Maintenance: $300 between 29-30mi, $500, 30-32, $1000, 32-36 and $10,000 (complete 30k mi service, plus clutch, bearing, dealer blessing). In all, roughly $12,000 for 10,000 miles. Insurance: $800/year (No tickets/ no accidents married 39 male, Collector's policy NV, no driver less than 25, no more than 2k mi/year) $4,000. You could argue I did the second 30k mi service early ('07; first '03) but I am glad I did it when I had the spare cash and I feel better knowing it is completely sorted and ready to go.
I lay awake at night thinking about what could go wrong with our '92. The word on FChat was to budget 5K per year for maintenance alone. So far it hasn't been nearly that bad. Like Jayo5 we coughed up a few grand in the first hundred miles but since then we have gone 5,000+ miles/2.5 years with just a leaky hose and scheduled fluid changes. However, it doesn't take much to run up a serious repair bill with these cars. I hold my breath every time I turn on the a/c, adjust the suspension, run the rear windows etc. But what I don't worry about is the drivetrain letting me down. Rock solid and purrs like a kitten.
