    I bought this one:

I specifically avoided a bluetooth one and went for one with a cable because I wanted to exclude any bluetooth pairing issues from the whole process of getting comms working with the ECU.

Is it a European car without an OBD port, or does it have one? I found out that to get a reliable connection when making up your own cable, you need to connect up more than is given in the postings on here. Specifically, you need to connect the chassis earth wire as well as the ECU earth wire, otherwise you won't get a connection. There is a separate earth pin on the OBD socket. I think the postings on here just say "take +12v from the lighter socket" but you need to take an earth from there as well.

Ferrari left out the one of the ground pins on the OBDII socket. As a remedy in North America, they will jumper an adjacent ground and add a pin, in order to correct it.

It's a slightly different issue in Europe. 355's in Europe have no socket at all, and a separate lead has to be constructed to connect to the 3 pin sureseal connector which branches out of the wiring loom next to the ECU. I'm not sure whether his 456 has a socket or whether he is having to make up his own cable. If it's the latter, that's what my remark relates to.

    Hi

The 456 comes with an obd II port I have added the extra ground pin.

It's the same obd II reader as yours well cosmetically anyway. The lights do their merry dance when connected the port is recognised but the protocol isn't and the connection drops.

Might be different internals on the reader. Using pcmscan works fine on my range rover. Will check all cables again I do get continuity on pin 4 to 5 so the extra ground is not the issue. Might just be bad luck on the obd II reader. Will see if a local garage has a more upmarket reader that can at least prove. Communication!!

    The saga continues!

Are you connecting with immobiliser armed by any chance? Mine will do much the same if I try to connect without first disabling the immobiliser.

have disarmed the alarm, tried with key in ignition, with key out of ignition..

the obd ii reader goes through all of the connection protocols but does not find one its expecting.

lights on the obd ii connector flash as thew data is trying to be transfered, so i think its working up to that point.

any suggestions is it likely to be the obd reader itself?

This thread is of interest as I have a sdl blinking. In this quite the op states that he eliminated the sdl by clearing the obd codes???

I thought that the sdl. was independent of the obd and that clearing it would not resolve the sdl. I have cleared my obd and the sdl is still flashing.

Well after I posted that I went out and started the car and cleared three codes and the sdl did go out with the right tc out of the cat.

I'm lost. I have rt and left green ecu (newer) and the third one is black (older). All the plugs appear to be installed correctly.

I will put the tc back in and start over again and see what shakes.
