Hi - Need to do a recharge on my AC after an engine out but is there any easy way of telling if the system has already been changed from R12 to R134a?

Just a bit of advice. Don't convert your 348 to R134a. They system will never work as well as it did with R12. I've actually unconverted my 348 back to R12 because it works so much better.

These days with all the reclamation and such low demand, R12 isn't rare. The hardest thing you'll have to do is find a shop that works with it. Look for a place that services older cars, like muscle car shops, etc... if they don't do R12, they'll know who does.

R12 is really bad for the environment
Its a CFC that kills the ozone layer
Also a GWP (global warming potential) of 10900
    Banned since 1995

Nevertheless, R134a doesn't work well in systems that were designed for R12. If you want decent AC in a 348 you need to use R12.

R12 isn't rare, but competent A/C techs who service R12 are. So rare that most have no choice but to convert. Which is too bad for us.

The problem with converted systems; the leakage rate. It's inevitable that R134 will leak through a R12 system, on some cars it's faster than others. So, more top ups, that's all.

Here's mine after it's initial re-service with R134 (just stopped after a drive, Florida day, low 80's).

Those photos were taken last year and the A/C is still too cold to run on high all the time.
