They didn't do their homework: Jalopnik and the corollary article Why you should never buy a Ferrari F355
Wow, if we ever needed more proof that Jalopnik SUCKS this would be it. Total clickbait, and this is coming from a 348 owner. Jalopnik needs to die.
Just another kid in over his head because they don't understand that the price of the car is not the total cost of ownership. Ferrari cars are not for average people, simple as that.
Nah, he's doing this intentionally-- using profits from clickbait to underwrite his ownership. It's disinformation pure and simple, but presented in such a way that it can't be refuted since he's supposedly relying on unknown service facilities. Kudos to the kid(s) for finding a way to get others to pay for his/their ownership experience, but jeers to them for using interweb hyperbole that creates a huge misperception of the car in order to do so. Typical of the current state of the intwebZtoday its all about creating content instead of about disseminating useful and accurate information. Meanwhile, those of us who love and care about the cars will continue to support them with real and accurate commentary long after these opportunists have moved on to the latest and greatest Audighini.
These are not knowledgeable owners. Easier and FAR more profitable to generate clickbait than to research the model before purchase. Sadly, this will help build an unwarranted bias against the 355 akin to the same BS we 348 owners face. But these children don't care-- they'll be moving on to another model (more clickbait) soon. They're not owners, they're opportunists pure and simple.
I so tired of buttholes bad mouthing the 348. I work on my car ever nite I always find something to play with. Not cuz it's broke but because I love my car and want to know every inch every screw nut and bolt. I've had every toy you could imagine including boats antique and custom motorcycles. Machine guns cannons tanks jeeps race car etc etc. never had a helicopter. But I'm not dead yet. And wouldn't trade my 348 for any of them I love my car. And anyone who bad mouths any ferrari. Is not a true son of Enzo I don't give a poop what anyone says. There is no such thing as a ****ty ferrari. Even a wrecked one. Even wrecked they still are beautiful And they call us stupid Italians. Horse **** on them
Young, broke and stupid....and they buy a 355? Brilliant! What could could possibly go wrong? Then they write about the bad part of the equation...blame the car! Oy.
A bit sensationalized, but based on a lot of truth. Headers, valve guides, engine outs, sticky bits are all known areas.
No different than it has always been with exotics. The internet just provides a larger audience. I ran into a guy at the grocery store just a few days ago with a Ferrari T shirt on and I asked if he had a Ferrari. He said yes and went on about the 2 best days of owning a Ferrari, the first and last. He proceeded to tell me stories about how expensive his 328 had been to own and what a nightmare. He finally asked if I wanted one and said no I have 2 so he said I guess you know then. I just told him he must have had a real POS of a mechanic and walked away. I have been hearing it since the 60's.
You and I are on the same page, Tommy. I'm the kind of guy who prefers to save an example of pretty much *anything* significant, even if it makes no sense monetarily, just because it is a significant part of history. Guns, cars, planes, boats, houses... it doesn't matter... because they aren't building any more of them. And yeah, I too am tired of the 348 getting dissed on. I've loved the 308 since they were new and I lusted after the 355 when they were introduced, but as a longtime car guy and Ferrari aficionado I chose the 348 specifically after researching the entire 308-355 model range. The 348 is far from the car that has been portrayed in the press. In this case it'd be easy for me to enjoy a bit of schadenfreude due to the much ballyhooed 355 getting dissed, but I can't bring myself to do so because the implied criticism is unwarranted. If you look back to the early days of this forum 355 owners were generally most complementary of 348s. It's only within the last few years that a certain segment of the 355 crowd has become kind of snarky toward the 348. But that doesn't mean that 348 owners have to follow suit-- after all, we know what it's like to suffer from (being generous here) inaccurate press. Both models are great cars which offer the best of the Ferrari experience in a package that can still be maintained by a competent DIYer. So any time either model is inaccurately portrayed we owe it to one another to set the record straight. Im a big fan of anyone of any age fulfilling their automotive fantasies, but in this case it seems to me that the youngster(s) behind this video are more interested in indulging themselves than their love of the marque or any particular model, which seems rather obvious based on the lack of context offered in the videos. Bottom linethis latest video makes for inflammatory clickbait, but it aint reality for most mature, hands-on owners.
Yes, all true but the shop was taking real advantage. 100 miles after a major and suddenly it needs a valve job? I have seen it happen but it didn't get a compression test at the major. With the history of 355's I do it before draining the oil. A minor clutch fix of some kind for a few hundred and a hundred or so miles later it needs a clutch. All happens but only at the hands of the crooked or incompetent. All those fixes in a 1000 mile period? Can happen but not terribly likely.
Why do you guys even go to that stupid site? They're a bunch of smart azz vulgar haters. They are the National Enquirer of the car world who come here to lift "story" ideas. Don't click them. You just encourage As I know they are reading this and laughing at your comments, here is my message to them: Go drop dead.
Exactly. This story reflects more on the owners and the techs than it does on the car. Every single car built (regardless of make) has issues that become obvious once it matures. A knowledgeable tech like Brian will educate neophyte owners and guide him/her through the process of bringing the car to spec. Thanks to the interwebZ, a great deal of that info is available to individuals *if* they're willing to search and read. Something is very wrong with the story as told.
+Infinity. Total garbage site as far as Real Car People are concerned. Only interesting to children, just like the video that started this discussion.
Wrong. I was working in a large Ferrari dealer when the 355 was a new car and the problems caused many to walk away from the make forever. Trying to perpetuate that myth is like saying the sun isn't coming up tomorrow. Are there fixes for the problems? Yes but there were too many and too expensive and Ferrari did a terrible job of dealing with them. People buying brand new cars shouldn't have to get multiple sets of exhaust manifolds replace before the warrant runs out. They shouldn't need valve guides before the first major service. I could go on but is has all been said a hundred times here. Refusing to accept the real history of the car will not change that history.
Which has to do with the claims made in the video HOW? These kids are referring to today, not 20+ years ago. If you would bother to read what I wrote I said EVERY model has its issues, regardless of make. As a longtime German car tech I can assure you that the krauts are no more willing to make things right than the Italians, but German cars are still touted as being much "better engineered" than Italian cars, when the truth is there have been a myriad of well documented issues that the German car makers have denied/ignored. The type of problems you cite are not unique to Ferraris by any stretch of the imagination.
I've watched a few of that kid's videos. Morons. They bought that car with no PPI, and almost bought a Lambo the same way. Broke on it's first drive because it had like 6% clutch left.
