Early jets, maybe F86's? they found holes in tail surfaces after diving firing passes and it didnt take long before they figured out it was brass from the 50's in the nose. It was at least 40+ maybe 50 years since I read it but I think some aircraft were lost.
When you see footage of propeller aircraft on a firing pass you just see brass raining almost straight down out of the chutes in the lower wing surfaces.

The Navy lost an F-11F Tiger to one of its own cannon shells, but that had nothing to do with the empty shell. He flew a profile that intercepted the cannon's trajectory.

I have read about that too. theoretically in anything mach 2 or better you could shoot yourself down if you followed your ammo on the correct trajectory long enough for its natural velocity deterioration to allow you to catch up. Mach 2 is about 2200 FPS. With a 50 that happens at about 700 or 800 yards. Then you start catching up.

Brian- He was supersonic, but way slower than Mach 2 and the hit was a lot further out. A real golden BB, except there was a string of them.

Those are U.S. Marines in a CH-53, but their weapons employment is similar to how ours was in the USAF. Neat vid.
