Car is completely cactus. Note how the Targa top has "popped". Sure indication of chassis damage.

Parts car at best. A slab of VB as Ash would say.

At about 16:15 on Friday 2 June 2006 I was heading east on Mona Vale Road towards the 'Palm Farm' at unit 4 165A Mona Vale Road where I intended to garage my vehicle. I had stopped for petrol at the station near St Ives Showground about 16:00. I was not in a hurry. The road widens into two lanes eastbound for the steep climb to the Bahai temple at the top of the hill. Slower traffic including a large pantechnicon took the left lane at about fifty kilometres an hour up the hill and I followed the faster vehicles into the right lane at about sixty to sixty five kilometres an hour. It was twilight and steady rain was falling. The speed limit was seventy kilometres an hour but due to the conditions and traffic I was travelling below the posted limit.

About three hundred metres short of my destination at Ingleside there is an intersection with Addison Road. On approach to the intersection the car in front moved into the left lane and I prepared to also change to the left lane, observing the widening gap between the car in front and the following truck. I changed to a lower gear and immediately the car went into an uncontrollable four wheel spin towards oncoming traffic.

With half a second I had collided with an oncoming vehicle, a westbound white Mitsubishi Lancer station wagon ADN26C with a lone female occupant.

A second or so later a black Ford utility ATQ67W following the white Lancer collided with my now stationary Ferrari pushing the vehicle sideways in a westerly direction.

I turned off the ignition and went to the aid of the driver of the other car who was clutching her chest and screaming. I feared she was having a heart attack but could not open the driver's door and ordered an ambulance summonsed.

The accident happened very quickly. As the car moved off line I attempted a gentle correction to the left but the steering gave no response (it felt like I was sliding on ice). The car then pointed directly at the oncoming vehicles (and I thought I was about to die) then continued to rotate clockwise across the path of the oncoming traffic. Just before impact I applied the handbrake and pulled the steering to the right in an attempt to point the vehicle downhill and avoid impact but cannot judge whether this had any effect. The spin was arrested by the impact.

The following day I inspected the scene and discovered leaf litter and sand had collected in the gutter at the north east corner of the intersection which had directed the rain run-off into the centre of the road. As I lifted my foot from the clutch during my downshift all four wheels would have been aquaplaning until one wheel found traction and started the unrecoverable spin.

Police, fire and ambulance vehicles attended. The scene was extensively photographed by a photographer from The Manly Daily. I was transported by ambulance to Mona Vale Hospital for X-rays, a blood test and tetanus injection and released with minor cuts and bruises. My Ferrari was undrivable and was conveyed by Bakker Towing to secure premises at Mona Vale.

Yeah.. looks and sounds like a scary experience.

Whats the plan for the car?

Funnily enough, I was driving up Mona Vale Rd today and got passed by a red 348 Spider just before the St Ives showground.

Care to share the chassis #? :)

How old are (were) your tyres? Its unusual to be aquaplaning at 65kmh.

Everyone out there with "toy" cars that do low kms and have perfectly legal tread depth should consider GXI328's experience here very carefully.

Rubber hardens as it ages and the effect accelerates with age, a 5 year old tyre has significantly less wet-road grip than a new one, irrespective of the tread depth. A 10 year old tyre is lethal.

Carl Jones has been trying to spead that message since I have known him but people still insist on driving old tyres, personally I wear out the rears too quickly then by the time the next set of rears need changing it is time for the fronts as well

I remember when I bought the Merak it had original tires on it which had alot of tread. When I went for the test drive I was coming down a hill and applied the brakes and the tires just locked up and slid. The first thing I did was to replace the tires and was amazed at what a diffrerence it made

^^^^^^^^^^ X 2. VERY IMPORTANT and often overlooked. There are a number of mega $ supercars in Melbourne on tyres that have a measured hardness similar to concrete (no joke).

First thing I did on the F50 was change the tyres. The OEM tyres had 2750km's on 'em and looked new. It was horrible to drive on them and a new set of boots transformed the car.
