Second time an ignition coil has gone in the last three months and whether this is a coincidence or not, it seems to be again within a day of doing a system reset (turning off the battery cut off switch and getting the system to re-teach itself).

Could this possibly be the cause? Or maybe firing the engine up prior to leaving it the full 30 secs learning period? (this might have happened by slight chance).

While cyl 2 coil has gone this time (it was cyl5 last time) I also see another code each time a coil blows of P0300 which is random/multiple misfires. I also had 02 sensor high voltage last time too. Could either of these be the cause of the coil going?

Apparently I can test how ship shape the rest of the coils are by testing them with a multimeter, which I should do anyway I guess, but I'd be thankful for any knowledge anyone could give me. The car doesn't have the smoothest of idles especially when coming off the power at low speed (parking etc) so maybe a bit of tlc will go a long way!

    Thanks all!!

INteresting. Could just be the coils aging and coincidence. Makes me wonder about the alternator, voltage regulator and connection.. re: voltage spikes. Not a bad idea checking resistance in the coils, check for uniformity.. Are you sure there are not more coils going.. with the rough idle? Yo umight also check the plugs for difference in appearance to isolate coils firing but misfiring irregularly.

Thanks, yes I thought it might be something to do with a voltage spike too. Could be a coincidence though as I wouldn't be surprised if they all need changing.

Apart from physically pulling them all out and checking the resistance, I guess there's no other real way of testing? Its the same effort to check the plugs and with no codes being thrown up the only way to tell if something is on its way out is by ear? Although the car is 12 years old so I guess the idle could be expected to be slightly lumpy.
