I've been on here since sept 2010...when I got a 1979 308 GTS...at an insanely low price...the car has been in storage since 1990,needs a little tlc..[nothing I can't handle]....I got the car with no title and no keys...applied for a title here in NJ..[jumped thru some hoops]..and after 8 weeks got it legal !! Had to remove steering column and bring to locksmith to cut key..drove it around locally to evaluate feasability of restoration before I start throwing money at it, and it looks like it's a go!!...looks like it was well taken care of when it was last on the road....came with a complete gasket kit minus the head gaskets, old timing belts,[still gonna install new T belts] carb parts and old points and condensers....all the emissions were removed and its got aftermarket exhaust.....needs interior carpet and new paint[existing paint looks like maaco paint job complete with runs+overspray]......anyway,I just wanted to introduce myself and say that I've gotten a lot of useful info from this fantastic forum that I couldn't have gotten from anywhere else !!Amazing, thanks guys!! Now to spend some $$$$

A Ferrari and my favorite year Chevelle, I'd say the guy has it covered. Welcome, look forward to hearing how the process goes.

I'm pretty sure its an ansa exhaust Mike....I'm a bit rusty on parts identification for european cars, but it's all coming back to me...slowly...[ I was a tech at a Fiat/Lancia dealer in the late 70s]

Congrats on the new ride!!! And hope to see you at some of the events around NJ! Be sure to check the NY/NJ/CT TriState Forum. There will be lots of events posted. Once you've got the car up and running, I'm sure you will have fun at many of these.

But in the meantime, do yourself a favor -- DO NOT drive the car around with the old timing belts. You are asking for trouble. Changing the belts is not a big deal. But if one of them breaks, or a tensioner bearing lets loose, you are in for a world of hurt, as these are high interference engines. And be sure to change all of the hoses, both coolant and fuel lines, as well as vacuum lines while you are at it. The filler neck hose and the cross-over hoses between the two fuel tanks down low are very important, indeed.

Read the stickies at the top of the 308/328 section, and be sure to check Birdman's site for guidance. Between the manuals, the many threads on here covering just about everything, and lots of helpful folks here, you should have no problem getting her up and back on her feet in no time.

So welcome, and glad to have another NJ member of the fraternity!!!!!

Congratulations on your purchase! I went through almost exactly the same thing with an August 2009 purchase of a 1978 308 GTS that was in storage about the same time as yours http://f308.blogspot.com/p/history.html . As already mentioned, make sure you do the timing belts and replace the fuel lines right away. Have fun!

Thanks for the welcome guys!!...the next step is to change the belts,I already did the fuel system and most of the coolant lines, removed what was left of the A/C system...[compressor was missing]...and straightened out the electrics...only drove it for about 20 miles to see if there were any other issues...and everything looks good....I'll be checking out the events around NJ for sure this spring!!

Leakdown or compression test completed yet? These motors are pretty sensitive, so prior to tuning and ignition timing being checked, it's good to hash out the baseline stuff. We're here to help so take advantage of the search function and asking us what's what. Very glad you're here :)
