Picked up my 488 GTB today. Rosso Corsa / Cuoio. Didn't go crazy with CF (the 650S I traded in had CF everywhere and it got old real fast). Based on 50 miles or so, I have zero regrets. It's good to be back!

    Depreciation rant:

Before the 650S, I had a 458. I bought it for $267k with 500 miles, and traded it in for the 650S for $220k at 10,000 miles. So it cost me about $5 a mile over 2 years and 9,500 miles.

I bought the 650S for $245k with 2,500 miles, and traded it in for the 488 for $169k at 7,500 miles. So it cost me about $15 a mile over 2 years and 5,000 miles.

3 times the depreciation. 3 times!

The 650S is a seriously impressive car. It is probably faster than my new 488. I don't care. It definitely isn't as much fun (and trust me, I drive my cars hard--most of all those miles are fun miles). And depreciation is worse then even my (already lowered) expectations.

No 720S in my future, thank you very much!

Congratulations!!! Just beautiful. I've owned many and driven most, and Ferrari is still the only brand that truly floats my boat!

Ditto - Once bitten with McLaren - Lost similar money to you and drove similar km's. Dealer just offloaded it and made next to nothing on it :(

Very stunning! Congratulations! Like others after having some great cars, Ferrari is the one for me. Any interior photos?

Congrats! The 488 GTB looks great.

Depending on your point of view, some will say the 488 resale will get impacted significantly by the 720S. On the other hand, what matters is what you prioritize.

Hmm, I don't know any of my ferrari friends that are dumping or getting off the 488 list for a 720. Think we can all agree that the 720 is an amazing achievement but I doubt it will do any significant damage to the hot Ferrari market. Time will tell.

OP congrats on an amazing car.

Congrats. Nice car. The 488 is the better car overall although the 650s felt just as fast and had a better chasis imo.
Where is this 167k traded 650s? Have a few friends nterested at that price

    Many congrats - a great looking 488.

Mine is due at the end of the month, so there is likely to be a another similar post then!

720S may look tempting in terms of performance, but I think the design is a bit confused, and the bottom line is, its not a Ferrari!

    Thanks, everyone--much appreciated.

I got some PMs wondering why I traded in the 650S for so little, instead of listing it for sale. Actually, the 650S was listed for sale (on consignment at McLaren San Francisco) for 3 months(!), from January through April. I also posted about it both here (in the "Other Vehicles for Sale" section) and on McLaren Life, in addition to listings on eBay, Cars.com, AutoTrader, etc. It was originally listed at $209k, then we kept dropping the price every few weeks, and in the end there were still no takers at $189k.

Was it the unusually rainy weather? That it was a coupe, not a spyder? That volcano orange is an acquired taste? That some potential buyers barely fit into the CF racing bucket seats? That CarFax showed 4 sets of new tires in 2 years? :) Who knows... The car was truly impeccably maintained, lovingly cared for, and a perfect track weapon. I'm sure the next owner will have a great time with it. For anyone interested, it should be available for sale at Ferrari San Francisco: San Francisco Area New Ferrari & Used Ferrari Dealer serving the Bay Area, Mill Valley, San Rafael & Redwood City

Regarding the 720S, while picking up the 488 yesterday, I randomly ran into a friend of mine who drives a McLaren 570S and just canceled his deposit for the 720S. He was at the Ferrari dealer to look at the 488 instead. One anecdotal data point, I know.

it's not only 650s that price drop like crazy.. I was in Ferrari SF yesterday cause I am following up my California T that I got last September which I put for consignment when I got my 488 GTB last month. The California T was 223,000 8 months ago now listed at 199 no taker for a month. Too risky to wait since the price is dropping every day so they offered me 170. That's almost 55,000 depreciation for 8 months with just 1200 miles on it. I got the Cali T just to get allocation for the 488.

This is what keeps me from looking at the 720 seriously. As the car was announced, I was smitten by the performance. But I can't wrap my head around the looks of the car nor can I get over the massive depreciation of the former models.

The reviews haven't been glowing so I fear the 720 will suffer a similar fate to the 12c and 650. I got a 488gtb earlier this year and couldn't be more happy. Love the car.

Congrats to the op on the addition. The saying nothing compares to a Ferrari holds true.
