I have the press kit from the movie and the Popular Machanics magazine article on how they made the movie. I'm sorta of a GP junkie also.

It has always made me laugh, when I've watched the movie, at how much Graham Hill nearly steals the show. Seems like he's in every group scene and even managed a couple of mumbled lines. I wonder how much of that was Frankenheimer using a driver who was, perhaps, the most recognizable to non-enthusiasts, and how much was Hill just mugging!

    From the top, these are:
    1. Frankenheimer's staged French GP at Clermont-Ferrand (the real GP in 1966 was at the less photogenic Rheims) with a 1965 Brabham F1 faked as a Ferrari.

2 and 4. Jim Russell (ex-driver, and owner of the school that provided the Lotus cars for faking) plays Sarti as his front suspension breaks at Stavelot corner at Spa in the Belgian GP; the car in the background is a 1964 Lotus 25 F1 playing a 'Yamura'.

    3. Garner as Aron catches fire as he crosses the line at the British GP at Brands Hatch; the fire got out of hand and Garner was really burnt, which is why he has scars on his neck in the closing scene of the movie on the deserted track at Monza. In the foreground is another (unfaked) Lotus 25 F1, but I don't think it was Jim Clark driving it.

The first two shots are of a scene that was cut, where the Yamura at the Monaco GP blows up going up the hill; the noise of a backfire was faked by a SFX man firing several blanks from a revolver as it went by! The driver was Phil Hill (1961 Ferrari WDC) who can be seen standing by the McLaren M2 film car as it's rigged.

Maybe Pete Aron wasn't content with stealing Stoddart's wife, seeing as Francoise Hardy is wearing his helmet too!

And the colour shot is of early days of filming at Monaco, with all the fake F1s and Frankenheimer with his back to camera in the foreground.

I have no idea, but if it's true that's WONDERFUL. Michael Mann is one of my favorite directors, with an unusual and deep style of cinemography. One can only hope he is engaged in such an endeavor.

There are a couple of interesting bits I've noticed in the movie showing how Enzo co-operated...............in the Monza pit and paddock shots there is a genuine F1 Ferrari 312: Barlini rolls into the pits in it during practise, Sarti does his wheelspinning late start to the GP in it, and there appears to be an over-the-shoulder onboard shot of the real Parkes in a real Ferrari passing fake cars, presumably done between practise sessions before the real GP.

Something that makes me think some of the scenes were filmed out-of-sequence..............Pete Aron's visit to try and get a ride from Ferrari is supposed to take place after Monaco (May); but in the background inside the Maranello race shop we see mechanics wheeling an F1 engine on a trolley towards one of the cars there - and it's clearly a 36-valve engine, which was only used from the Italian GP (September) onwards.

Gattorari, URY914 and anyone else who's got stills or out-takes or presspacks or knows someone who has.................please get them on here for all to see.

That's a fake BRM, not Brabham; ex-driver Jim Russell was commissioned by Frankenheimer (via Carroll Shelby) to provide the cars, and sold MGM all the Lotus 20s and 22s he used in his racing school at Snetterton.

These were faked-up with the help of sneak previews of the new 1966 cars from the teams (Lotus were meant to be featured in the film but wouldn't play ball so they switched to BRM). MGM also bought a load of surplus 1965 1.5-litre F1 cars, including 3 Brabhams, 3 Lotus 33s, a Cooper and a BRM, some of which were also faked-up. In some scenes in the movie the cars switch back and forth between Lotus 20 fakes and Lotus 33 fakes from shot to shot!

Here are a few shots of Lotus 20 'BRM P83 H16s' from the movie - they used a lot of them up!

Notice how the real Ferrari 312s used at Monza are the 24-valve version. As the team introduced the new 36-valve engines at that race, they probably kept the older versions around as t-cars and allowed the movie crew to use them when they didn't need them.

If the 24-valve cars had still been the primary team cars, that almost certainly would not have happened.

You're right I typed the wrong name in. Of course the H-16 wasn't in the Brabham. Someone back in the 60's described the 16 cylinder BRM as sounding like "the tearing of fine linen". Must have been a little louder though.
In the 70's I raced in a Formula Ford series through the Jim Russel schools. There were schools around the world and a few drivers from each got a paid two week trip to England. We drove at Snetterton and had a dinner at Jim Russel's estate. He had some of the cars from the movie there.

I have it on laserdisc--a 2-disc set, actually, and watch it occasionally. While enjoying the flick, I'm afraid I lack your passion for it. Prefer Le Mans, also on laser. But in the final analysis, there's nothing better than strapping on your own Ferrari and going for a drive. . . .

    teak360,
I don't know which of the two 16-cylinder BRMs could have been described as making a sound like 'the tearing of fine linen'! The V16 1.5-litre supercharged car sounds like a herd of demons screaming and the H16 3-litre sounds like a growling bear!

Mind you, the Bugatti 35 was also traditionally described with the 'tearing linen' sound, and I don't get that either.

    Gatorrari,
The three Ferrari 312s built in 1966, s/n 010, 011 and 012 were all fitted with 36-valve engines for Monza. Apparently 010 was the car that Surtees drove until he left and was then raced by Bandini until the end of the season; 011 was a spare at Monaco and Spa, unused and then not taken to France/Holland/Germany, and used by Scarfiotti to win at Monza; and 012 was a special long-chassis car for tall Mike Parkes from France onwards

It seems MGM skipped the Nurburgring and rented Monza for two weeks in August, and allowed Ferrari to use the circuit for testing in return for the use of a car for the startline shot and some static shots, after Enzo had been impressed by seeing some of the rushes.

In the shot where Aron visits Ferrari to try and get his old job back, supposedly after Monaco in May, we see two 312s in the workshop on stands without engines and the 246 on the floor (the car that Bandini drove at Monaco/Spa and Scarfiotti at the Nurburgring) - but we see a 36-valve engine being wheeled on a trolley towards the cars! So maybe that scene was also filmed in August, as part of the deal while the third 312 was at Monza before getting its new engine.

Yeah i think he did, He also kinda made Pete Aron seem like a bastard. What teammate would block his teammate coming up to lap him when he has a gearbox problem?

It seems none of the out-take footage has survived from the cutting-room floor, only stills in private collections.

So if the gaps are to be filled in, we'll have to re-stage the scenes.....

Aron's Yamura and Sarti's Ferrari; and the "He's on fire!!!" scene.
