I received the following email in response to the ad that had been running on the FCA website for my '84 Mondial QV. Sounds like one of those scammers to me, but what do you think?

    "Hello,
How are you today? It so nice of me to write and make enquiry about the above mentioned in the subject coulmn if it is still availabe for sale?I have read all you said about it and I so much love to have it at the last price of $23000.If you are o kay by my price, kindly get back to me asap so that I can make the payment arrangement . Looking forward to read from you."

I was tempted to write back and say yes, car is still for sale, payment is cash or certified check drawn on a US bank, and if you pay by certified check, the car and the title will be held for 30 to 45 days until my bank verifies that the check was accepted and payment made by the issuing bank. Waste of time? I'm not into playing games with scammers, so nothing to be gained if it's going nowhere.

So, anyone that is not fluent in English is a scammer? You should be glad anyone wants a Mondial.

If you get your bank's ID #(SWIFT# or IBAN#), your account # and other acct info and give it to the buyer he can have an electronic bank transfer made, directly into your account. That way you will only have to wait a few days, to assure the authenticity of the transaction.

He will NOT be able to withdraw funds from your account, only deposit.

It sounds fishy. Why not ask him when he'd like to come over for a test ride? When he starts in with being out of the country and he'll have a shipper pick up the car, then you know it is a scam. It does not make sense to ship a Mondial internationally, the automobile is too cheap to justify the costs. If this person is unable to come to you in person, move on.

I would not reject it out of hand, but follow up with the appropriate due diligence. Your skepticism will protect you.

No, but would you take a mail-in check and hand over the keys and title based on that email or would you error or the side of caution too?

I'm not a coupe guy, sorry, but I WAS wondering how much my Europa might fetch! LOL

A Cab QV is likely to be my first Ferrari when I get my act together.

He is not asking for that. He simply states that he is interested in the car at that price. I guess if you are feeling guilty about the price you have a reason to not trust the e-mail sender. So far nothing in that email should throw up any red flags, other than the poor English skills. It just reeks of stereotyping to me, and I am the least PC person on the planet.

I wrote back to the guy, told him the car is still available, and asked where he was located and how he would like to arrange payment. Let's see what he writes back.

    Rickenbach,
A Mondial happens to be a wonderfull car. It is just as much a Ferrari as the ones I see in your bio that you want. I suggest you should sell some of your plastic chevy's and get your dream Ferrari.

I had many of the same type of offers when I had my Lotus Esprit for sale. They all came from Europe and all involved a third party "agent" who would handle the money, shipping, and sometimes creative financing. When I suggested using a bank wire transfer most offers fell right off the table. Oddly enough I ended up selling it to a great guy in Belgium who was professional enough to offer to wire the funds to me. We then used a bonded shipper and off the car went. Whatever you do, do not release the car untill the money is real. Proceed with extreme caution!

Go ahead and let him send you a check. No harm in that. Just sit on it until it is cash in hand.

Now it is starting to sound like a scam. Did his English get better, or is this some other guy acting as a broker?

My plastic Chevys have too much sentimental value for me to part with them anytime soon. Besides, they are appreciating faster than Ferraris are, right now. I covet the Ferraris in my bio, not because they are Ferraris, but because they are amazing cars that I fully intend to own (except maybe the 250GTO) once I find the right cars.

Yes, this has trouble written all over it. The $27,300 check won't clear, if you actually receive it. Even if the bank hands you the cash you could get burned a week or two or three later when the bank finds out there are insufficient funds in the payor account.

If it were me, I would request a wire transfer or wait for another buyer.

I have two Yukons for sale, similiar emails, they can't spell or write for that matter. They always ask on the 2nd email where the vehicle is located as well.

On another note, since fuel is high, even the scammers have quit sending emails regarding the Yukons!
