Hi all, a strange thing has appeared this morning at my tr. While running , the engine stops . I was on the side of the road and tried to start it. it ran a little only if i let the pedal full throttle. I jump the relays of the pump and then it ran but only on 6 cyl. I've inverted the ignition coil and the igintion module and nothing change. After working sometimes, suddenly it starts to run great on it's 12 cyl even without the jump on the relays pump . Is it another fuses boxe greamlins? My tr is 85 european version. Sorry for my bad english
When you install the jumpers at each of the fuel pump relays do you hear both fuel pumps run? (Might be best to install the jumpers one at a time to confirm by listening that each fuel pump is running.) When this happens, it would be very helpful to confirm/deny if you have spark occurring on both banks -- that will determine whether it is an ignition problem or an injection problem. It can be as the +12V power to run each ignition system passes thru the white connectors, but this has not been reported here as a common problem. If, when running on only one bank, and you've confirmed that spark is missing from one bank, then it would make sense to at least inspect the G (yellow) wire connections in the y white connector associated with the ignition system (this diagram of the white connectors is for a US version TR, but I believe that all of the connections for the more "basic" functions, like ignition, are in the same places): Image Unavailable, Please Login
Dear Steve, thanks for your answer. At the first thing, yes the two fuel pump are running, i have made what you propose. At the second thing, i can confirm that there is no ignition on the 1-7 bank cyl. When the car is runnig on 6 cyl, some fuel vapor come off the exhaust and it's smell fuel. I have inspected the yellow wire on the white connector and for me it was good. The problem is when she run on 6 cyl, it's only with the relays jumpers, when i put back the normal relays , she starts and stall immidiately . And suddenly why i don't know, it's starts on the 12 cyl even with the relays in the fuse boxe. What a strange issue
This is "normal" behavior for a testarossa -- if the 7-12 coil is not working. There is a special relay, called the tachometric relay, that controls the fuel pump relays. When the starter motor is cranking, or when the 7-12 coil is firing, the tachometric relay is closed -- which closes the fuel pump relays. When the 7-12 coil is not working, the tachometric relay closes during starter motor cranking, so the fuel pumps run, the fuel system pressurizes and the engine starts OK on the 1-6 bank; however, when you release the key to the "run" position, since the 7-12 coil is not working, the tachometric relay opens and both fuel pumps stop running so the engine dies after a few seconds when the fuel pressure on the 1-6 bank falls. When you use the jumpers, the fuel pumps are always running (even though the 7-12 coil is not working), so the engine will continue to run on the 1-6 bank. If the 7-12 coil is OK, but the 1-6 coil is not working, then the engine should start running on the 7-12 bank and should stay running on the 7-12 bank (because the tachometric relay stays closed even though the 1-6 coil is not working). Sounds like all is OK now - so nothing to fix
Steve, where is this tachometric relay and what is reference. I'll change it, because if the car is now running well, i don't know why it stops while runing on the road .
You have no reason to change this tachometric relay -- it can't cause the 7-12 ignition to fail. If the engine started OK, and BOTH banks of ignition were working, but the engine still died after a few seconds when you release the key to "run" -- this would be the symptom for a bad tachometric relay. Also, if the tachometric relay was bad, when you use the jumpers at the fuel pump relay sockets, the engine should run perfectly on both banks (note, this only applies to your euro F113A TR engine; it does not apply to a US F113A040 TR engine nor a euro F113B TR engine). This thread has the information about the tachometric relay: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=373818 but you will be wasting money if your real problem is that one bank of ignition is failing.
Steve, my real problem is the engine that stops when the car is running on the road and it's fairly dangerous.
Understood, but you need to determine if: 1. it is stopping because the 7-12 bank of ignition is failing, or 2. it is stopping because the tachometric relay is not working, or 3. something else. And the big difficulty here is that just a single bad wiring connection can stop a component from working even though the component itself is OK. From what you have described, it seems #1. What you can do is carry the jumpers with you -- if the engine stops, install both fuel pump relay jumpers: if the engine works perfectly = something wrong in the tachometric relay system if only one bank works with both jumpers installed = remove the jumper from the bank that is not working (so you don't pump fuel into the dead bank), and limp home (or to a shop) on the single working bank -- then fix the ignition system on that bank. Until the "problem" becomes more consistent (so you can really figure out what is wrong), I don't see how you can fix it.
[ if only one bank works with both jumpers installed = remove the jumper from the bank that is not working (so you don't pump fuel into the dead bank), and limp home (or to a shop) on the single working bank -- then fix the ignition system on that bank. It's exactly what happens, with the two jumpers fitted , that i have with me in the car . So yesterday i have put the 7-12 coil and ignition module on the 1-6 bank and it fires immidiatly. I have a new coil and ignition module so i'll change it on the 7-12 cyl and wait... Steve thank you so much for your advice .
