I have installed my new timing belts and belt tensioners. The old belts were of unknown age and looked fine. The bearings also looked fine but once I had them off it was obvious that one of them was definitely on its last legs. It was difficult to turn and did not turn smoothly. I have removed the spark plugs and rotated the crankshaft several full rotations. The only thing that concerns me at this point is that the belt on the rear bank wants to ride in towards the engine. The belt on the front bank seems content to ride right on the middle of all the sprockets. Inspection of the old belts shows some shininess on that edge of the belt and the sprocket also shows evidence that the belt was riding against the fence on the engine side. Is this acceptable? If not where is the adjustment, or what do I need to replace?

The flanges on the cam gears should be opposite each other for each bank (one inboard, one outboard) in order to prevent the belt from creeping off.

If yours are not this way, some careless tech in the past put them back on incorrectly....

Edit--viewing your picture again, I see they are mounted properly. In this case the belt should not slip off. I think there is some play-factor allowed....

Everyone I have gotten a response from agrees. That would be my neighbor (who know almost nothing about cars) and my 15 year old son (who works mostly on 49cc honda motorcycles) and a FerrariChat member from Texas (that I don't know from Adam but, he does have 1,774 posts) However I am stil a bit uncomfortable so I will call and ask the mechanic at the Ferrari Dealer who is generally helpful, and I would still like to here from a few others here.

it's normal. belts will walk back and forth on the pulleys, the flanges keep them from coming off. the pulleys are not crowned so they wont self center, belts will ride the high spot on a pulley so if your belt stays in there then very likely the pulley has a high spot.

That first fire up feels really oddly scary, huh?? (even though youre 110% sure you did it all exactly correct, and turned it over by hand with the plugs out about 400 times) BTDT :)

Congrats. Welcome to the DIY brotherhood of the belt service !!
