Thought I reset the timing on the 308, but on further review, didn't. When I put a timing light to it, thought I was seeing the mark, but from the opening on top, it was a bolt. Only realized this when it happened to stop where I could see it. I didn't see anything thru the slit in the back. Is the timing so far off that I am missing the mark, or am I missing something in my method.

In addition to Mike's point, have you first "manually" found the timing marks (and you have two sets of marks -- one set for cyl #1 and another set for cyl #5)? Often, they are so subtle/corroded/unclear, that you might need to add an auxillary paint mark on the clutch housing (inline with the true "mark") to see them more easily when running.

This was the problem. The real marks were so faint, they were very hard to locate. Once I had the correct marks, I remarked them and was done in 10 minutes. Thanks for the input.
