Question: What would it cost if you did an engine out service to rebuild the top end and replace the motor mounts, AND you told your mechanic to fix anything else that was wrong?

The price included the valve guides, belt service, mounts and labor time, of course, but he found a slew of minor issues - and one major issue - while he was in there. It was like, "I don't know if you want to address something this minor since you're planning to sell the car..." But I had every little thing addressed. The big issue was a steering fluid leak in an impossible to reach place. This was smelling up the cockpit, and it is a huge relief. Very minor leak - I wasn't ever low on fluid between annual services - but the cabin had this minor but irritating smell to it.

The minor things included rebuilding the headlight motors and replacing plastic reservoirs and lines. So I've basically done a rolling restoration to this car. The engine bay looks like that of a brand new car. It's amazing. And the headlights pop up better than they ever have (I had a droopy one fixed early on).

Jim put about sixty test miles on it, and I've had it out three times now, and the car is better than ever! So glad I did this.

    Cheers,

    George

George- Sounds like she will be pretty much brand new. How many miles when the valve guides departed?

George, what was the cost of all the "minor" issues and what were they?

George I can relate to that, interesting except for the steering mine (M) cost the same in AUD. I also had the aircon compressor and new Alternator (A/C leaked onto it) included in that

    Hi guys,

I'm going to go through the bill and put up a complete list of what was done when I get the time. For now, here's a photo of the engine bay. I had hoped to get a nice day, but it's been on-and-off rainy here. So, this is just in my garage taken with my ancient iPhone 5c. They also comped me about a $500.00 detail job, so it looks better than it has since I bought it too. I just love this car. I've had it over five years now!

    Cheers,

    George

    George,
Just for piece of mind I can say you paid a fair price.
My mechanics at Scuderia Perfomante, which are the former master techs at Algar had a 456 in the shop for the same exact work and it was about the same cost too.
These guys are the best in our area and very very reasonable.
It's great seeing guys like you keeping these cars in top condition.

That sounds about right. I had similar work done less the valve guides and it ran $15K.
