I'm replacing these components and I had a question about the valve that sits right between the two canisters. The valve is white on one side and black on the other. The black side has the word tank on it. Which side points towards the fuel tank the white or black side?

NOT THAT I'M AN EXPERT but I think you answered your own question. The black side has the word "tank" on it. I would be inclined to hook that side up to the line coming from the tank.

That's what I thought but I know someone who took theirs apart and it was opposite. This got me thinking we need a few responses to see which way it goes.

If I remember, I'll take a look at mine when I get home tonight.
NOT THAT I'M AN EXPERT but,

The whole idea behind the system is to recover raw fumes from the fuel tanks and purify through charcoal.

Clean off the ends and blow on one side and then the other to determine flow through the valve. Assuming this installs in the line coming FROM the fuel tank, install with the flow TOWARDS the charcoal canister.

Thanks Spasso. My new one is already installed and so far seems to work perfectly. I did try blowing through the old one and got no air through on either end, hence where my problem must have been. The other TR owner has his installed the opposite way and he too said his is working perfectly. Hmmmm

I'm also no expert - It looks like the two way valve. Important thingamajig. Installed backward will cause severe problems like crushing the fuel tanks. It requires some small pressure difference to allow flow from the charcoal cannister back to the tank (to allow air back in the tank as gas is pumped out), and maintains a positive pressure of ~1/2 psi in the tank to limit the outgassing vapors to overwhelm the charcoal cannister. When you remove the cap on a warm day and hear the hiss as you unscrew the gas cap, that's because of this two-way valve.

NOT THAT I'M AN EXPERT but,
If I am not mistaken the raw fume recovery system is a loop, moderated by engine vacuum. Not sure if installing the valve backwards would cause damage or not, possibly defeat the purpose of the system though.
Speculation at this point, I can't get to my car or the WSM
