On older Ferraris with no security system, are there any aftermarket anti-theft devices recommended? Specifically, is The Club or LoJack effective?

Generally today just a manual transmission is the best anti-theft device you can have in the US.

Battery cut off switch or fuel pump shutoff switch (with this you don't have to reset clocks and radios). Thieves like to get in and out. hard to steal a car they have to push or spend too much time on.

I wouldn't necessarily call these 'anti-theft' devices, because like all things, with enough force/willpower anything can be defeated... but, we do have these available from Hill Engineering: Manual Transmission Gate Locks. I used one on my car for years; it provided just a little more peace of mind, and confidence that a passerby might be deterred from a 'crime of opportunity'.

When I had a small sports car and lived in a downscale neighborhood, I would pull the distributor rotor at night.

Every single person that I've take for a ride in my F355 had trouble finding the door handles, even after I explained where they are. For that reason , I rarely even lock the car.

I think LoJack is a good idea but also read that thieves have devices to detect their presence and either disable them or bring the car to a location that will block the signal.

If I was going to steal an exotic I would take it from a valet or dealership as the keys are easily accessible. 2nd to that a tow truck.

This is an interesting solution. How does it keep from scratching the gate when installed? Why did you stop using it?

That’s funny. I thought of the door handle issue; the difficulty of getting it into reverse; and other potentially theft thwarting quirks.

Regarding valet, I like Leno’s take: "Never give your car to the valet. You got to be out of mind to do that."

Theft by tow truck is the scariest method of all.

There are small rubber bumpers on the underside of it, so no 'metal-to-metal' contact occurs. You can see how they look in the second picture here: GL-03CA (I realize you'd need a different version --- but the design is the same on all of them)

I stopped using it because I sold my car to another Fchatter.

Back in the 70's I knew a guy who wired a capacitor to his door handles so anyone touching them would get zapped. Not sure how he insulated the handle though.

I have an old iPhone with a minimal phone service. When I'm traveling or driving the Fcar, I use this iPhone as a LoJack device, using Find my iPhone. This isn't a theft deterrent, but at least you will know where your car or luggage went. An iPhone charger could be wired into the car so that the iPhone can be left in a hidden location. This solves the "theft by tow truck" problem.

In South Africa, they used to market a flame thrower alarm that shot flames from under the sills in the event of a theft...... now that’s what I call justice!

Great, thanks for clarifying. I like the visibility of this deterrent. The fit and finish look great too.

Great idea. I’ve been researching purpose-built devices of this nature. They are surprisingly cheap to buy; however the real expense is in the monthly service fee. The LandAirSea 54 GPS looks particularly effective. It would serve as a nice complement to a mechanical deterrent like the gate lock at Ricambi.

I signed up for PureTalk for $10 per month. I'm using an old iPhone4 that I never got rid of. Works great.

$10 monthly is way cheaper than most of the GPS services I’ve seen.

In the UK we have Cobra Navtrak, a system provided by Vodafone. It’s GPS and Cellular, and has driver recognition plus the ability to track the car in most circumstances. It costs £300 per annum ($400 approx), and the box is hidden deep inside the car. It’s fitted to all Ferrari’s sold here new, and Maserati’s and other marques as far as I know (I’ve not bought a car that hasn’t had it in years) and you just subscribe to the service. Expensive, but not as expensive as losing your car!

There are also small units for sale here around £80 ($110) that you can hide in the car somewhere, and run on the same system, you just put a SIM card into it to be able to transmit. The thing I like is that they also have a microphone, so while you are tracking the car, you can dial in and listen to the people in the car, so if they are on the phone planning to hide the car or whatever, you can hear their plans and ideally have them met by a nice gang of Albanian repo agents who will retrieve the car to you, and drop the perps off in a large hole full of lime on the way!

Today you would be sued by the would-be car thief for causing them harm whilst they were going about their chosen (illegal) profession! ;)

You would get sued in America for that.

I dont leave my car anywhere that I cant see the entire time its there, which is usually at a gas station . I get in it, drive it, and put it back in my shop which is behind locked security gates, in a secure building . I dont go shopping in it , i dont leave it in the parking lot at the movies, or at the mall, its a driving machine, a pure form of that as well. Ferraris are made to be driven, other than that, if you need transportation, go get in your truck, thats what its made for. I know that todays Ferrari owners would be concerned about that, thats because in todays world, well, I will just leave it at that . With that being said, Im so into driving my car, and I get so excited, I can not get out of it until Im completely satisfied , its that much of a passion, I put in back where it belongs, until the next time I get the feeling, and I know I want to be glued in the seat, for however many hours it takes. I have to say, although I want to own a 488 GTB some day, I have to ask myself , will I get that same feeling Ive had with my 328 , for the last 22 years ? Im not really sure to tell the truth. I guess I will have to find out.

    Thank you

If you haven’t driven a modern Ferrari, then I think you’ll really enjoy it. And you won’t have to worry about someone trying to steal it from parking at the mall with all the new tech. Depending on what city you live in though, someone might slap a tracker on it.
