Like many of you out there, I have an extensive collection of 1:18 scale Ferraris. But the Pocher models are the top dogs! I while back I was lucky enough to buy a Testarossa. It was already assembled but was intact. But my primary model-collecting goal was to get a Pocher F-40. A couple of days ago I bought an assembled one on ebay for less than $300 and thought I did good. I finally had my big F-40. This morning my girlfriend and I decided to go antique hunting in a mall a few miles from town. Up and down the aisles we go...reliving our childhoods, etc. Karen was walking ahead of me and said "come here...there's a Ferrari model in this booth". I figured it was simply one of the many I already had. You can imagine my amazement when it was a mint Pocher F-40 !! You'd never expect to see one amoung a bunch of old antiques...but here it was! I just couldn't believe it! The price was $150 !! I asked to look at it up close....it had one paint chip on the rear spoiler....other than that it was perfect. I'd already decided I was gonna buy it...but the evil side of me asked "is there any negotiation on the price?" And the girl said....."yes.....I can let you have it for $125"......my mouth was watering at this point. I think that once she saw my reaction she knew it was a good deal....for me that is! So when my "ebay" model arrives I'll have two Pocher F-40s! I never thought I'd ever get one let alone two..all in the space of a week. Hmmmm.....you just never know.....

I just wanted to share this story with all of you fellow Ferrari-Lovers!

Do you really want one? I still have mine NIB that I bought back in LA in 1995. I didn't have time to build it after 10 yrs.

I was asking in this forum about the fair price of an NIB Pocher F40.

Pocher was noted for making a $200 Rolls-Royce model with a zillion pieces. You built the engine much like a regular engine: put the rods on the crank, pistons on the rods, etc, and when you turned the hand crank, the pistons would move up and down in the cylinders. The wire wheels had to be hand laced. You have a bag of spokes, a smaller bag of nipples and 5 or 6 rims.

They also made other models including a 1903 Grand Prix Fiat that was chain-driven. You had to make the chain link by link. Incredible detail. Well, in the mid 1970s, the factory had a fire and had to liquidate their inventory. Tyco (yes, THAT Tyco) bought the goods and dumped them in K-Marts for about 15 cents on the dollar. That $200 Rolls-Royce model could be bought for about $25! My dad bought two of everything and built a few. Several Alfas, Fiats and Rolls. Later, they came out with an awesome Mercedes 540 or 550K with roll-up windows and dual spares: 6 wheels to lace-up.

The Ferrari Pochers are nice, but really pale to the build-quality of the earlier cars. Can you imagine a pontoon-fendered 250 done in the quality of the earlier cars?

I found a Testarossa Spyder today at Goodwill.
Maybe the best 10 bucks I ever spent.
Funny thing is there was another guy checking it out in my cart.
It is a little beat up but I plan on brining some life back to it with parts from www.scaledetails.com

I will post pics to show the progress
