I'm seriously considering a 308 GT4 at Gullwingmotors. I've been to their place before, but I haven't seen this car and I live in Texas. Does anyone know a good mechanic in the area I could send over to check it out?

I don't know much about Ferraris or even service dealers for Ferraris but I have seen a few posts mentioning Steve Arena and Arena Motors. They were happy with his work.

Gullingwing motors usually sells crap , but if it is cheap it could be worth it. I would vouch for Steve Arena. He is not too far from them and would probably be able to do a PPI for you-honest guy, fair pricing, excellent work. His number is 201-288-2003.

Do a search on Fchat. They come up often enough. Tired cars at best usually.

Thanks much guys. I appreciate the counsel and advice. I once wandered into Gullwing over Christmas (my family's in Albany) and found an array of tired to scrap, but neat tired to scrap. I'm looking at this thing because they've also got a couple of e types that maybe worth checking out. I'll talk to them Monday, but my guess is that they'll not want to shuttle two cars to Steve. I could send him over there to drive both and to rule them out or in and then run compression if the initial impression warrants it.

I'm facing a minor conundrum with a car at Gullwingmotors. I've had a recommendation for a great mechanic to check out a car there, but he wants it brought to him and Gullwing won't let cars wander off. They'd let him work on it there, but he obviously doesn't want to drive an hour and a half to check out a 20k car. If there's someone on the borad who knows the model, I'd appreciate greatly if they could swing by and look at it (they'd let you drive it too if you were up for it), and just give me a consequence free .02 cents view of it, I'd appreciate it. My thinking is that it may be just not worth pursuing. If it is, I'll make him a cash offer contingent on its passing a compression test and being able to shift up and down through all the gears.

Gullwing Motors rarely has anything worth considering. I say "rarely" because I am givng them the benefit of the doubt. I have never seen a decent car there.

    David,

Just bear in mind that a 308 series car costs the same to maintain whether its a 328 a 308 or a Mondial or a GT4. Additionally, the initial cost of a car like a Ferrari is only part of the equation. The difference between a better candidate 308GT4 and the one you are looking at (my opinion of course) is probably four or five thousand dollars. You could easily spend that in one year on maintenance or repairs to the wrong car. You would be better off paying a bit more for a car that is cared for. The cars at Gullwing motors are usually tired, run down neglected cars in need of massive cash infusions to be enjoyable in the way most people intend. Go into this with your eyes open.

David-I went to see this car some time back; they have had it there for quite some time. Didn't hear it run so I can't comment on it mechanically but cosmetically the word "tired" is perfect for it.

Gullwing...cars are crap (but at least you KNOW what you are getting and paying from there) you think you got a bargain but when the needed (read urgent) repairs are done..you are unhappy (yes, even the .."i'll do the work myself won't b economical)...a while back I bought a ferrari from him (Sam Kumar) , car was in a accident and poor repair ( OK Sam might not have even known he buys 'em and puts a fixed mark-up on 'em and gets rid on them fast), halfway down the block the clutch goes (yes stranded in Queens) electrical was all messed up, it was no bargain, even though I ran down there to grab it at that price. The web has been a blessing to that scrapyard.
