Thanks for the video link. I would have never thought to do them myself if not for that.

The small spring is amazingly small. It makes a pen spring look HUGE. I'll post a picture later.

    Haha. No!

There is a part of me that is beginning to understand the $65 a piece repair cost :)

This process is fun for me. I enjoy the hobby and the challenge. But 40 times over? Uhhhhh ;)

Great job Waston, and thanks for posting up the pics. This will help out the next 355 owner that needs this done.

Someone charging $65 each to clean each x 40???? Sorry but I'd keep my $2,600 and take the time to do it myself if I had a 355.

Again GREAT job and thanks for sharing the pics, and for Tim finding the video!

OK. I have 34 done. 6 are stuck and will not release from the bucket.

I applied as much heat as I could and still allow me to handle them with a glove...no joy.

    Any ideas?

We use GT car parts as our lifter rebuilder. Installed hundreds now with no issues at all. Cool to see them apart though, thanks for sharing guys.

    Try flushing them with ATF
I have not tried to get a bad one open yet, I'm sure there's a few tricks that can be done

I'll take a look tomorrow to figure another method

OK. I'll try that tomorrow. At the moment I am applying a glass of Cabernet to the process :)

I have a trick i would like to try. I have a jeweler centrifugal casting machine. Tim lets spin one up and see if the guts pop out nice. If so that can be the new fast painfree method of extraction.

It sounds like the varnish is acting like "Loctite" on the retailing clips. I'm guessing if you are able to dissolve the varnish you may be able to get them out.

Try soaking them over night in Berrryman Chem Dip. They have it for sale at Walmart for $18.54 Berryman Chem-Dip Carburetor and Parts Cleaner - Walmart.com

    Johnny,

My purge procedure was as follows:

    1. Put large spring into large cup.
    2. Fill cup to brim with oil
    3. Put plunger into cup
    4. Fill back of plunger with oil
    5. Push down on the plunger
    6. Push down on the ball
    7. Push plunger all the way down.
    8. Release.

These are rock freaking hard when I am done. That correct?

What happens if you do not get ALL the air out of these?

Thanks Ernie. I think you are correct. Never heard of that that stuff. However, it appears by the looks of my garage cabinets I collect spray oils, degreasers and other toxic chemicals so this will be a great addition :)

    Yup. Soaking as we speak.

Uhm, thanks Ernie. I did indeed go to a Wal*Mart for the first time in two years (They were my customer for 10 years). What a slice of Americana there is at 10:00 am on a Thursday.

OK. 5 hours of soaking and no joy. I'll leave this one in over night and see what tomorrow brings, but I am doubtful.

This Berryman product one the other hand is a must have for your garage....how did I now know about it before?

    Overnight soak. No joy.

Worse, all the oil is out of the lifter and it is moving freely. I need to get it out now to relaod the oil.

Heated up...nothing. In the freezer. Nope.

    Help....any other ideas?
