My 458 Italia has been sitting in my garage all winter. It's getting to be about time to wake it from it's slumber. (And wake the neighbors too).

Having been around race cars all my life, it feels like I should be pulling the plugs out and cranking it over to get oil pressure before trying to fire it -or use a pressure oiler of some kind.

Obviously this isn't very practical, so I guess I turn the key and go for it? With all the talk about how Ferrari micro-finished the cam and cylinder walls, it feels wrong to just fire it up after 3 months without wetting the internals first!

simply ensure the battery is fully charged and assuming the fluids are good which they should be start her up check to ensure the engine lights go off then drive her off slowly til getting it up to op temp or atleast around 140 F (oil temp)then drive a little harder till fully warmed ie op temp.. then let her rip..
In other words no special procedure except make sure the battery is charged.

I generally do nothing else than inspect all fluid levels (those easily accessible) and have a look underneath and in the engine bay for spillings of whatever nature. And firmly test-press the brake once before starting (would be awful to speed out of the garage and right into something due to lack of brakes).

The older cars needed that sort of wake up call. Not the 458. If you have a road where you can lope along at around 45 to 20 minutes or so start up and drive off slowly on to that course and you will find the car warmed up all the way through after twenty minutes. Then, have at it. Oil, chassis, tires, everything will come up to OPTEMP.

    Thanks guys,

Getting in and warming it up really seems to be the only option I guess. It goes against my nature to do this however....it feels like I should be oiling the system somehow! I'd never just fire up a race engine that's been sitting for 3 months.

If you feel more comfortable, remove the plugs and spray a little oil into the cylinders.
