I own an Architectural Firm in Redlands, CA (hcarchinc.com). How many of you are Architects, Designers, Engineers, Consultants, etc. to this field and own a Ferrari? Name your location and expertise and the car you own with pictures if you have them, let the network begin.

    Nice website, Darryl.

There are probably a dozen professional architects who pop up from time to time here, some architectural students and interns, quite a few builders. Many are Ferrari owners.

I'm out of the business now, but still do some part-time contract work for another firm, mainly interiors and design development.

    For cars, see my profile.

I'm licensed in FL, AZ, and UT currently. While I live in Florida the majority of my work has been in AZ for the past several years. The homes I have designed recently are on the website www.buydesertmountain.com (there are 1 or 2 homes on the site that are not my design). I have had my 348ts for about four years now. My only Ferrari picture on this computer is below...

Darryl, since you said related fields too, builder here. One of my current projects is featured at: www.huntjwindy.com

The web site features a real time web cam, construction photos, bid package schedule and renderings of the finished product. I work for a national firm with many areas of expertise. I see you do much K-12 work. We do too and have a division in your area. Keep us in mind for future work opportunities!

My niece is a college sophmore holding a 4.0 in interior design and arch drafting, so I'll also take this chance to brag on her. :)

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Nice collection, cars and offices!

A testament to the fact that one can do very well in architecture.

Uh......I guess so, but the recent crash has caused my client base to stop new projects. I've had to lay off half of my staff of 65. This coming year will be a difficult one.

I feel your pain, believe me. Best wishes, and hang on.

The last 20 years have been good in our profession, though. Your pic with cars is great!

My cousin is a partner at one of the largest US firms, says they have 2 planned layoffs coming in the next few weeks. Many projects have been shelved, and he's facing possible layoff at age 62.

I'm retired now and work part time for a small specialty (ultrahigh residential) office. If our biggest project gets put on ice, I'll be the first to go, but that's the fair thing. There's just 3 of us, the other employee is full time & has a family.

Sorry to hear that. I agree with you that 2009 will be difficult. Hopefully by late summer, the outlook will be more optimistic. Our US clients have all but disappeared. Our European clients, which is 85% of our work anyway, are still going. However, at a slower pace. We laid off 2 out of 17 people, and really tightened the budget.

I'm an architect in Eugene, Oregon. I've had a life long lust for Ferrari, and will someday own one. For now, my early 911 does just fine.

By the way, we are swamped in our office that does mostly institutional and commercial work. I consider myself very lucky!

Not all architects can afford fill a garage full of exotics as most that I know of are living the simple life as do I. I always have at least one classic car at any given time and currently have a silver 328 GTS. I shouldnt really have the car because it does occasionally cause me to over extend myself. In any case, I'm here in Santa Fe, NM and do high end homes and commercial work for a very well known firm in the area. Love old cars and motorcycles and love to have grease under my fingernails.

Just a friendly rant against you architects, but I do wood floor & roof truss estimates for a living... Could y'all please pay a bit more attention in mechanical engineering & materials classes so you have a clue as to what is possible? I can't count the number of times I've seen cantilever conditions that wouldn't work with steel, much less plate connected wood trusses. And do you really want to try clear spanning 30 feet with a 12" deep floor system?

I don't get a kickback for time spent re-designing a building, yet at least a good 70% of all plans I see need to be modified so that the basic structure even functions.

I'm sure not particularly busy these days (nobody is even bidding new work & I'm usually swamped over the winter) and I'd bet most architects aren't either, so maybe it is a good time to brush up on some of the fundamentals?

Just a friendly response to your "friendly rant":

If you are working with architects that are seriously suggesting a 30 foot span in a 12 inch deep floor section, and it isn't in post-tensioned concrete or a two way slab....

Then you might want to reconsider the architects you choose to work with. :)

Indeed. It's been tough in 08 and I expect it to be worse in 2009.

Our firm has had to lay off half of it's 325 person staff, as well. I don't see an end to it anytime soon, either.

LOL! That is a great point, but as a material supplier (truss manufacturer) we aren't often consulted by developers as to which architects are reputable. Would be rather nice to have some form of regular conference that was attended by all parties involved in the building trades such that they could make their gripes known.

Best wishes to you & yours in this new year!

I wish I was (I'm in computers), but my wife is in the Interior Design/Architecture field. She does mostly commercial spaces now but has done some residential in the past.

Her firm's other offices are hitting hard times these days as well. She works in the DC area, and for some reason every 4-8 years there's new work ;-) Fingers crossed the work keeps coming in.

On a non-work front it is always nice to do plans for housing upgrades for our family, saves a lot in architect/design fees.

I'm a real estate agent, does that count? LOL I was looking into architectural design in high school and took drafting and all that my senior year, but then had to get straight to work to help out with the bills and such for the family. Tough times. I kinda haven't stopped working and recently (May of '08) got my Realtors License. Guess it's a related field... I mainly do ranches and commercial property, but I just listed a really beautiful lake house for a local builder. It's his personal house. Anyway, just thought I could relate to you guys. We are seeing tough economic times as well, but it's mainly in residential sales. Our farm, ranch, and commercial land sales are pretty steady. Hopefully things will get better for us all.

    Laters,

    Brian

Architectural design work in the South Florida area as a small group (simply myself). Times are tough is an understatement. Hoping, like the rest of you guys, that things get better soon.
