The 328 is getting some new tires in February. Current tires on the car are Goodyear GS-C ZR in stock sizes from 2001. Overall no complaints, I've been on a lot of spirited driving (amazing Colorado roads) and never had an issue. Overall I've found them to be pretty predictable, though I've never heard much if any "squealing" as you near limit (which I wouldn't mind... Right? This would be a good thing?)

I've done a fair amount of research. I've decided to stick with stock tire sizes.

Everyone has an opinion about the tires ("I've got so-and-so and they're pretty good") so it's hard to really come up with a decision. Local master Ferrari tech recommended a local tire guy who he deals with frequently.

My choice in tires so far is the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3, available in stock sizes, not exactly cheap but not quite the most expensive tire you can get, either. This was actually recommended as an option to me by the local tire guy before I brought up this particular option. He did not have them in stock so they are a special order (so he's not trying to push current inventory as far as I can tell). So that's a plus.

For those who run this tire (Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3), or have run them, do you have anything bad to say about these, or any other concerns? I'm looking to get 10-15k miles and 4 years out of them. Any other comments about this tire in particular on the 308/328/Mondial 16" wheel application would be appreciated.

By the way, for pricing info on these, see this thread:

Yes, one thing....check the manufacture dates on them. I am currently on my second set on my BMW 540 and first set on my 355. The dates Tirerack.com is shipping lately all seem to be december 2005!

I am not overly concerned, since I will wear them out in a couple years easy... ;)

Good thought. What would be a reasonable manufacture date to accept? Latter half of 2006 say? I could make this a condition of the sale.

I had Goodyear F1s on a previous car of mine, and have only good things to say about them. They're unidirectional though, so make sure they get put on the right way round!

I wore out a set of GS-D3s on my supercharged C5 Corvette, including track days at Thunderhill. I had no complaints at all, but wanted to experiment, so I replaced them with Michelin PS2s. For my level of proficiency, the two brands are identical, so I'll go back to the cheaper GS-D3 tires when the PS2s wear out.

I had GS-D3's on my BMW coupe and they were fantastic.

The 328 will be getting a set this coming spring to replace the original F1's. There's nothing anyone can say that would make me want to buy a different tire.

A very competent tire...and even better in the wet... I have owned a few sets on Porsches...very very happy with them.

I think Ferrari offers them on the 430 as well, but only in the US, from what I understand, I have never seen them on a Canadian 430.

I love mine. One negative comment: There is a barcode sticker on each tire applied on the bead. One of mine leaked air there. Removed the tire, scraped off the sticker, no more leak. Bad place to put the sticker, and Discount Tire said it happens a lot.

Based on what I have read on a couple forums, you will be very lucky to find anything even first half of 2006. I would tell them it must be at least 2006 production dates.

    I'm pleased with my set.

Stupid me, Dealer called that tires were in, I took the wheels to them for mounting and balance, Took 'em home and proceded to put on the Fcar...backwards. Know that there actually is a 'ROTATION' marker on the tire which they later pointed out to me. Funnily, couldn't tell any difference in simple traffic driving. (one could devise comedic storys about driving in reverse but I won't).

Should you wonder why the dealer didn't put them on the Fcar directly...I bought 16" wheels to replace my orig 14s and no way can you carry a set of wheels/tires inside an Fcar.

My spirited driving is minimal but no tire complaints or misgivings here. When America's Tire, which has had my tire business since they opened, did have difficulty getting 7" fronts, they obtained a pair from TireRack for me rather than just saying 'sorry charlie'. Complete set mount/bal all in >>> just over $600.

You just missed the sale from tirerack. They had the 225/50-16's selling for $89. I bought 4 for the wife's car. Do check with TR though, sometimes they don't list it on the website anymore, but still have a few laying around.

Ordered a set from Tire Rack for my 308 yesterday. Like Henry said, they are running a 'sale' on them and offered me the reduced price without me asking for it. Cool!
I'm having them drop shipped directly to the shop that will be mounting them onto my new Superformance 16" wheels. Was told they'll be delivered this Thursday. Now I have to spring for 20 wheel bolts. Ouch!

IIRC sponsor Hill Engineering has the bolts.......

My Goodyears from the warehouse don't have bar code stickers! :D :D :D
But that is a good thing, to clean the sealing bead.....

GSD3s are molded in Germany so there's transit time.....

Interesting. I called Tire Rack and they have the lower $89 price for the rears (225/50).

The fronts are still on regular sale for $131.

The deal with the rears is, the country of manufacture varies apparently according with speed rating.

So the full price $149, which from my notes was a Y speed rating, were tires made in Germany.

The sale tires at $89 a piece are W speed rating, manufactured in Australia.

    No tax, shipping is $12/tire.

    $489 grand total.

    Any red flags?

Not to me...remember the speed rating is for SUSTAINED usage so it's a moot point unless you are a Track Rabbit!

Thanks for the clarification...........mine are Zs.

Interesting, all three sets I have purchased were all made in Germany. Anyone ask about the date codes they are currently shipping? (it may vary by size of course)

I just put in a call to the local place. He heard me out, only had the "Y" rating in the catalog, so was going to call about the W rating. I told him the $89 price and he didn't seem too shocked, I implied I would be suprised if he could match the price but would give him the business if he could do so. He's got a few calls in and will call me back.

Did not inquire about date-of-manufacture but I'll call Tire Rack and see if they can give this information to me.

Jeff, as you tracked with both GS3 and PS2, do the GS3 pick up everything off the track like the PS2 do? My PS2 seem to get nicely warm and VERY sticky, yet sticky to the point that clag and everything becomes nearly 'at one' with the tire's underlaying rubber. Many thanks.

After reading the posts on other threads I too felt the Goodyear F1's were the best bet when I change mine(soon as I'm repainting the wheels). My only concern is will the tire be available should a problem develop with one of them. The current F1's have been around awhile and I'm wondering if in a year or two they will be NLA and then I'm doing mismatched tires or replace all four. Especially in our cars size, I think this is likely. Since most of us don't put more than a few thousand miles a year on our cars, we'll have them on for a number of years. Get them cheap enough, though, and getting 5 or 6 might make sense although I hate to do that and have them sit, and the two different sizes creates a problem as well. I don't think you can go wrong with the Goodyears, I'm thinking about the new Bridgestone pole positions(very new) or the A-01R(I'm probably off on the number, maybe it's A3-01R). Anyway, you probably know which ones I'm talking about. The latter are almost a track tire so stickier with faster wear(not an issue to me for the limited driving). Good luck in your search but there are a couple other options to consider. Price is pretty good as well.

Does anyone have any data on tire lifetime as far as degradation of the rubber, whether they are stored off or are on the car? At what point would they be unsafe, assuming plenty of tread still in place?

I had GSD2s before the GSD3s....I don't think they'll drop it soon it's getting good reviews......

I have to admit to not even thinking about that difference when I ran the PS2s - sorry! In all other performance respects, ultimate grip, turn-in, communication, highway noise, I found them essentially equivalent.

When I was researching/buying tires last year I went with PS2's pver Goodyear. The PS2's are 2-3lbs lighter per tire then GS3's. If weight is an issue look to Michelin's.
