so i went and got a cavity drilled/filled yesterday. when she was administering the lidocain(sp?.. also i think it was that, big shot.. numbing stuff). i felt surges of pain/uncomfortableness through the left side of my tounge.. i dont ever remember feeling this before. I could feel it surge through veins or something from the back to the front tip only on the left side.. the lady said its what its supposed to do.. well, the left side of my tounge is still slightly numb.. i can feel everything, but it feels just a shade below normal but enough to tell a difference in feeling/taste.. is this normal?? it is 9:30am PST which means i have 30 more minutes until i am 24 hours out of the dentists office..
I do not know how much she gave me but it was only one needle, she didn't refill or anything.. it was enough for 3 teeth on the bottom left side
    thanks for your help

    Hi Peter,

I'm a dentist. The caveat: I cannot render any diagnosis or treatment recommendations over the internet without personally examining you. The following is only general information that may or may not apply to your situation. For any concerns, you should see your dentist.

OK... that's done! :) Legal stuff, ya know.

It is possible that your lingual nerve (tongue) may have gotten a "direct hit" during the administration of anesthetic. Did it feel kind of like an electric shock?

This is not unusual. The good news is it will most likely improve on it's own. It sounds like it already is according to your post. Just give it more time. How long varies from patient to patient. As long as you're seeing a trend of improvement (vs. getting worse), you'll probably be fine. It may take days or even weeks in some cases. Every dentist has seen this.

If you have any questions, give your dentist a call.

    Mike
