My dad has got this really bad ringing in his ears for a while now and everyone he has gone to hasn't been able to help him. He's had it for a few weeks now. Hes worried that it may be permanent. Sorry i can't describe it more, if anyone may be able to help, i'll get him on here.

    Thanks a lot

Tinnitus is the bane of ENT. Normally there is little to do about it. It is usually caused by high frequency hearing loss from loud mechanical noise, i.e. machinery, gunfire, etc, so much more common in men than women.

It is false signals sent to the brain from the damaged part of the inner ear and as far as i know there are no mainstream cures although you read about experimental stuff.

I have a friend who confides that he hates to see these patients as they take a lot of time and he can basically offer no help; kind of like lower back pain to an Orthopod, or non bacterial burning on urination to a urologist. Frustrating to the patient and the doc.

I had a humorous experience with this this week. I saw a patient for an unrelated matter, and he mentioned, in absolute sincerity, that the ringing in his ears had gotten loud enough that his wife could now hear it.
I looked at him to see if he was kidding but he was stone serious.

Take this for what it's worth - not much, but you got what you paid for!!!!

Thanks for the help, my dad appreciated it a lot. He said the noise isn't loud and is usually drowned out by other noises but when it is quiet he can hear it.

Try low salt/no salt diet. Another treatment is water pills(diuretics). It is called Meniere's disease if he has dizzy spells too. He needs a neuro-otologist, Penn I'm sure has one. Ex had this @ late 20's, needed surgery when diet/meds failed. Tinnitus alone (ringing ears) is different, but often the dizziness comes later.

Yep, but young people who get it have worse course. Much more common in older folks. Neuro-otologist is guy. ENT specializing in ear/hearing mechanisms.
I have several friends who do this, but none in PA. If U need rec, PM me, I will contact my friends for u.

i don't think it's tinnitus... i've had tinnitus since i was a little kid... It's not painful and certainly not "loud"... it comes and goes, but not that often... i can never pinpoint what might set it off and when it does happen, it's only for a moment or two...

Chris, has your father experienced any head trauma recently...? Has been in any high decibel environments lately...?

i remember back at "the home", a young girl once complained of an ear ache... She went to the infirmary and the nurse immediately sent her to the hospital... While she was asleep, a roach had crawled into her ear and laid eggs... Ah, the good old days... :)
