I am justing thinking about buying a DL1 data logger to have it installed in my CS. Does anybody have any experience with this device? How to have the gear changes and engine revs logged?

    Any help is highly appreciated.

I have the DL-90 and it should work the same as the DL1. Revs are recorded with either a sensor hooked up to a plug wire or with a direct connection to the OBDII port. Either way works, the port is more accurate. Gear changes are recorded based upon your gear ratios. Enter in what they are and the gear you are in is calculated based upon RPMs and mph.

Rob, do you connect via ODBII to your Ferrari? What else is pulled via the ODBII?

I plan to get a DL1 later this month as part of a larger setup on my Stradale... so I am very interested in any direct experience with it (or the DL90) and the 360 or CS ODBII port.

I have the DL1 in my CS – the unit is very cool – the CompactFlash card makes it much more usable on the track than the DL90 + serial link

    - the unit is very accurate done to 2-3 m – impressive – and from all the test runs I have done over a weekend calculations are pretty close to reality (0-60mph - 4.1s; not sure what some car testers in magazines are smoking)

    - the GPS antenna is a problem to install in the 360 with the aluminum space frame - obviously the magnet does not work – I have it under the dashboard, velcroed, on top of the steering wheel support structure – I have not found any problems so far but have not used it in the rain or under overhanging trees – if I experience problems I will mount it in the front bumper

    - the DL1 unit itself is very light weight – I have it mounted at the end of the middle tunnel cover, i.e. in-between the accelerator and the battery – there is an elevated flat spot – my car gets it 5K inspection (if you want to have fun ask your F dealer for 10W-60 oil ;-) ); I will post pictures if I have it back – before the that I had it strapped to the middle-tunnel cover – first section; just at the location of the two screws – I did find the flashing lights distracting in that location

    - one needs an adapter to connect the CS OBDII port to the DL1 RS232 port – I have not looked into it but my guess is that chances are close to zero to get it – furthermore some of the information one needs is in the vendor specific range.

    - RPM can be sources from the ignition coil /ECU – I only have tried it to se if it works – I am reluctant to splice something into the wiring harness

    - Break flag can be sourced from the break pedal switch – easy

    - Gears are calculated from RPM, GPS mph and gear / final drive ratio

The software is pretty good but sometimes a little cumbersome – what I am really missing is a way to annotate the track map with turn entry, apex, exit – the track markers the SW uses are too heavyweight for that since they always imply calculations. The CompactFlash card interface is very cool – I have multiple cards and swap them between runs; simply plug them into the laptop and all data is available – I load a master run with all the markers and the run I want to analyze and off you go

look at the video overlay system at the end of the page referenced by the second link!

I have not hooked it up to the F-car yet, but here is an example of the DL-90 feeding off of the OBDII port with a Porsche:

I assume it can be done with an F-car, but will need a little development on someones part.
