I have been practicing martial arts for years. Recently got into MMA training. Well, I had full contact fight against a experience Muay Thai expert. My right thigh swelled so bad after the fight that I could not see my knee. Well, I went to the MD and it's a deep bone bruise (probably). The MD said to basicly stay off of it etc. I will not be able to see a sports PT for a few weeks. By the time I talk to an experienced one I'll be healed lol (bone bruises take a long time)...

Here is my question for PT or people with sports medicine background, or if you've gone through the rehab.

-- What things should I do/not do to speed up the healing? Should I do any light movements to keep the ROM? Would a EMS/TENS unit help?

As far as heat/cold goes, should I use ice and heat or just one?

I've researched this over and over and have not found any good advice. Thanks

You can't bruise a bone, "deep" or shallow.

You can bruise the periosteum (covering over the bone), which is where all the pain fibers are.

    That hurts like hell.

Uro, Thanks for the reply. That's what the MD called it. But, he's a GP and non-sports medicine. The pain is probably the most "intense" thing I've ever had. No amount of pain killers or NSAIDs helps, so I just go without. Heat does make it feel better for a short while.

    What things should I do?

Thats the usual term for the condition although its the covering not the bone. I think we are talking about the same thing.

I'm not an orthopedist, so take what I say with a grain of salt (NOT MEDICAL ADVICE!!!) but other than rest, elevation, NSAID, soaks, I don't know of anything other than giving it time.

I'd advise you to actually see an orthopedic doc as there may be a fracture or something else going on that you would not want to over look!

    Good luck!!

Uro, Thanks for your input. What about the EMS/TENS for this sort of bruising? I have used them with ice for muscle bruising before (with great benefit).

See an orthopedist to make sure it is nothing more serious; if nothing more that would be a good question for him.

    Good luck!

Ice , ice and more ice. Ice the area for 15-20 min then remove the ice. Place the ice back on again when the skin is warm to touch. You should ice as often as you can but for no longer than 20 min. each time.

You can use a TENS unit on a low pulse / rate setting which will give quick contractions of the muscle tissue helping to pump out the swelling. An EMS unit is not very useful for this problem. If you have access to a TENS unit and want some further instructions on proper set up let me know and I will guide you through it.

Unfortunately a "bone bruise" takes a long time to heal due to the fact that the blood supply is low to that area.

Did your primary care physician to some external tests to verify that there was not a torn ligament or meniscus? It may be difficult to correctly assess this kind of damage if the swelling was great when you saw the MD.

One last question, what was the mechanism of your injury? Were you kicked in the thigh?

    I hope this helps,

    Dan

Stop doing that stuff. There is no need to get the bones bruised. I also say ice and more ice as well. No heat for a while like 3 or 4 days and it might swell up more. I did martial arts for 9 years and my big toe has arthritis in it from all the abuse. One knuckle is also a problem. Keep up the exercise but go easy on the contact.

PT check your pm, thanks for the reply. Ryalex, very smart move, they use their shins to kick and it hurts lol.

Robert, Sorry about your injuries. I agree with the full contact being a no no usually. But this was an actual tournament fight. Usually I only go 60% with punches and kicks if practicing.

Why? Why would you allow yourself to be hit repeatedly and risk injury? Do you not respect your body and mind? Have you seen older boxers? They act like retards because their brain has taken too many hits and they have essentially become retards. Is this what you want down the line? Are you a retard already?

    Don't answer that.

I had a similar injury 2 years ago in a foot clash playing soccer and got the injury Uro described. Basically, theres very little i could do other than leave it to the passage of time. I was given an aircast to wear over my foot so it didn't have to bear weight, and that sped things up by a week or two.

Overall i wasn't able to run for about 5 weeks, and the only rehab i could do was biking and deep water running

good luck with it, I'd see if theres anyway to keep the weight off it to speed things up

    SD,
Sad to say but this is why I stopped sparring. As much as I loved the adrenaline and competition, I want to live a long live with all my appendages functioning.
I have a large chip out of my shin and a very questionable knee. Maybe you should stop. I originally began this because I am a small guy and wanted to defend myself.
Anyone that knows me isn't stupid enough to pick a fight with me anymore. Kinda pointless to me now.
