I have a general question for any eye care people here. I wear contacts on the weekends and have been for the last 12 years w/o any issues. Recently I changed solutions from B&L Renu to Opti Free, I had a coupon for a free bottle so I thought I would try it.

Ever since I changed last mth my right eye feels like I have a constant dirty lense, I even take it out, reclean it with the B&L solution and it does not work. The only time my right eye feels good is when I changed my lense. The pair I wore on Friday was 2 weeks old, wore them 4 times and this morning as a test I threw in a fresh one in my right eye only. Feels great. The best way I would describe it is as the lense soaks it is drying it out. My eyes never feel fresh.

I know the obvious answer is change back to B&L which I am on my way shopping to get new solution but can there be that much of a difference in brand name solutions? My Eye Dr. told me 12 yrs ago not to be mixing up different ones and stick with the B&L which I always have. When I got my new pair, he gave me Opti-Free bottle. So was that him pitching a product or was he using his professional experience?

    Thanks
    Mike

I'm not a pro, but I did stay at a holiday inn express last nite.
Is the Optifree for storage? I usually use 2 kinds of fluids, 1 for cleaning/storing and 1 for rinsing (saline) before I put it in my eyes.

Do you rub your lenses? Renu is non-rub so it will remove proteins and other dirt without you needing to rub the lenses in solution. Check if Optifree is non-rub, if it is not, that is likely your problem (if you're not already rubbing)

    Hi,

Both solutions are a No-Rub. Since this all started I have been rubbing them anyways to be proactive and still no better.

I do use the same solution to store and clean them. I had a little left in the sample bottle of B&L so I was using that to clean when I started getting this issue.

Just bought a big bottle of B&L so we'll see if that works. For all I know I have an eye infection or a scratched eye. Wouldn't be the 1st time

I was going to get contacts yesterday afternoon. When I got to the Optician's office, I was told he could not see me because he had just been a horrible accident!

Michael, let your eye doc know about this. I had a similar problem with lenses that I wore (2 week disposables) although my issue occurred with both lenses. Doc switched me over to these: http://www.us.cibavision.com/lenses/focus_dailies/focus_dailies.shtml

Wear them once and toss them. They are marginally more expensive than the 2 week disposables, but you will not need to purchase anything other than rewetting drops. No storage solution, no cleaning solution. My largest problem with them is finding a place to store them. When you get a years worth all at once it is over 700 lenses and my wife wears them also so we are at something like 1,500 lenses for a year between the two of us...they take up a whole shelf in our linen closet.

He is absolutely right! I used to wear fortnightlies before switching to daily contact lenses and the difference was amazing! My eyes were no longer dry and the lenses were so much more comfortable. Plus I didn't have to go through the hassle remembering when my storage solution expired.

I wear toric lenses, they were not available last fall when I got them refilled because I wanted them but I was told no can do. I still have 7 pairs left so when mine runs out I will ask about them. I saw they offer Toric lenses. Giddy up!

Good news is I soaked them in the B&L, I wore them all day today and they feel MUCH better so that Opti-Free is getting chucked or given to someone who has had better luck.

What's funny is I can't wear dailies. I was told they would be perfect for people like me with fairly bad allergies. I put them in and couldn't stand them, I can even describe it but all I wanted to do it keep my eyes shut. Now I have the sample packs as last ditch emergency back ups just in case.
