Gents, I'd be interested in hearing comments from any owners of both. I recently sold my perfect 599 because I thought it was a little on the boring side. Very fast and lovely to look at, but it just didn't get my blood boiling. Kind of like the proverbial supermodel who is only so-so in the sack!!! Some might say I'm crazy, but I kept my spectacular 550M over my 599. I recently bought a 650S spider, having previously owned 2 12C's. LOOOOOOOOOOVE my new Mac beyond words. Would like to add an F12 to the stable as a fast GT and I don't expect it to be able to do what my Mac does, but dare I say it........... If I thought the 599 was a little too boring, will I also feel the same way about an F12? I would welcome thoughts from any informed enthusiasts. Thanks to all. Wolf
I drove a 650 before purchasing my 430 spider and my impression was that it was fast and had a bespoke feel but in a way it was a bit to measured in the way it drove. I'm sure that a short test drive doesn't begin to show all the cars abilities but nonetheless that was my impression. I was overall very impressed with the car but for a weekend toy the 430 seemed more than enough for me. Enjoy it in good health. I realize I didn't answer the question asked but I wanted to share my experience. Btw good move keeping the 550 it's a modern classic.
Yes Wolf, you are crazy! What do you expect from such a car? IMO the F12 is todays most powerful and most entertaining GT, very different to a McLaren 650S and also very different to your Maranello. With these three cars in your Garage I really don't see a reason to be bored with one of them, a perfect car fleet. Therefore go for it. And if you will be bored with the F12 maybe try another sport, for example this: (filmed in front of my door) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uqh-mF-Es-Q[/ame]
The MP4-12C and its successors are arguably one of the best bang for buck deals on exotics when you factor in their insane depreciation in the first few years.
I have both and they are completely different. Love my 650S and all that McLaren is. But equally the F12 is the ultimate GT and is not too bad in the twisties. I say do it
You should buy the F12...I have owned both and they are terrific cars and very complimentary...you will never feel like having one too many...The F12 is a hot rod, unbelievable power, noise, pedigree and surprisingly nimble, the 650 is a surgical tool, cold to the touch, but engineered like nothing else with incredible attention to detail, terrific handling and feels like it was made for you.
It all depends what you expect from your new car. If you want refined beast F12 is way to go. If you want visceral, raw and completely different beast than anything you had so far, take 360 Challenge Stradale [ame]www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWNNmfWspQ4[/ame]
Interesting recommendation Milano! I had a Strad. Thought it was lovely to look at, but I would never be able to go back to such a primitive F1 tranny and I would find the car to simply be too slow for my liking today. Would much rather have another Scud before Strad. My speed preference tends towards wretched excess, which is why I think I might really like the F12. And I am looking at it in the context of an extreme GT, so I harbor no delusions that it will be like a slot car. I just want a naaaaaaasty fast GT to complement my 650S, which I absolutely love. Thanks to all for the very helpful comments!! Wolf
I would strongly advise you to try F12 Berlinetta multiple times before you buy it, because your expectations are seriously high. F12 TDF is car for you, but that is one expensive candy.
Sadly, quite true. I'm probably the only guy in America who sent his 991GT3 back to the dealer to take a look at it. I thought it must be in limp mode, because it was too slow after I had just come out of my 12C. Service tech looked at me like I was a martian and said "Nope, this GT3 is running just fine!"
Something tells me you will like the F12 but I also think you should try it first if possible. I don't own the McLarens so its hard to advise from that stand point. My gut reaction to some of your comments is maybe you should sell the others and get the 675LT. Thats like everything you want (mega speed+refinement) wrapped into one thing.
My friend has a 650s and yes it is very fast. The F12 is definitely more exciting than the 599 by the engine noise alone. If you can get one at MSRP or under it's worth it, don't overpay.
If you're looking for all out speed the 650s will be the winner. It has better traction and better top end vs the F12. In the curves the 650s will leave the F12 behind unless you drive the F12 like a maniac. The F12 sound will blow you away, the comfort and the design will be not far behind. I think the F12 compliments the 650s nicely. You get the best of both worlds with that combo.
I drove a 12C about 25,000 miles, and replaced it with an F12 which now has 6,000 miles. I agree with rm248 on the differences between the cars. Bottom line, the McL's are terrific sports cars, and the F12 is a world class GT. Each pushes toward the others' strengths, but is limited by the inherent tradeoffs of their respective format. And yes, the sound of the F12 is intoxicating, and is unmatched by anything I have ever driven.
I don't know... perhaps a fact finding field trip is in order! I just was thinking the McLaren hydraulic suspension is so impressive at providing sedan levels of ride quality but also keeping the car well planted and though they increased the sport factor for the 675, the reports are all that its still a fairly comfortable car when you want... I would go with the F12 because thats me, but just thinking about other possibilities...
I understand it is not the suspension which is superbly McLaren, it is the stripped out nature which makes it a tiring, but exhilarating, drive.

I've had an F12 for almost 6 months now and recently strongly considered a 650s spider to accompany it, but got a 458 spider instead. The McLaren is fast no doubt, but it's a completely different experience compared to the F12. The F12 being a gt car will also have the refinement that you're used to in the 650, but will come with that amazing v12. I don't think you'll find the F12 boring if you found the 599 boring, but you should definitely go test one out.
Hmmm, just drove an F12. Loved the motor and interior ergonomics. Thought the front end got awfully light when I jumped on it a bit in Sport Mode. Put it is race mode and things tightened up a bit. Not too worried however, as I hear Novitec springs do a nice job of firming up the suspension a tad. Very impressive car. I was briefly considering a Mac 570S to complement my 650S, but quickly concluded that it would be too redundant. I can't think of a better GT to complement the Mac than an F12!
