    If you are from MA or NH, you know the implications of running cars in each respective state with insurance in MA and with NON-required insurance in NH. Given that some can choose to insure in either state, it is a known practice for MA people to fraudulently get NH plates+ cheap or no insurance with the car being in MA and not at a legit NH address.

    The situation I am describing in this thread is as follows; you own a primary residence and a "summer" home in another state. Do you keep cars in each state, and if so, you possess a license in the primary state, correct? Well, it has been my experience that I do not like to drive a NH plated car in MA for more than a few days at a time. It can raise red flags, and nosy neighbors can drop a dime to Deval. So why is it that if you have a MA license and you are driving in NH on a NH tagged car, officers can and will tell you to get a NH license? And vice versa, if you are in MA with a NH license and MA tags, they will do the same? In trying to observe the 30 day law, it is a real pain to have to explain this to officers. Their computers will tell them instantly that the MA plated car is registered to a name that corresponds to a name of an expired MA operator, who coincidentally has long ago moved to NH... has this operator no right to garage a MA car at a summer home in Cape Cod? Is it possible to update a states computer database so that is realizes that the person has long since moved and is not some expired operator that needs to have guns pulled on him? I am partly exaggerating on the guns part, but still, raising red flags in this day and age is not a good form of entertainment.

    Thanks for reading, and opinions are welcome.

    so I got through to some people at the MA RMV. I can store a car in MA, but they recommend I add my NH address to the file/registration as the mailing address. I don't expect much mail from them, but if it gets the cops off my back then so be it :)

    The answer lies at the following :www.mass.gov/legis/laws/mgl/90-3

    Chapter 90 Section 3 states the requirement(s)

    HAVE FUN !!! THIS IS WHY THEY INVENTED LAWYERS !!!!

    Pay particular attention to the setence which stronly implies that if you operate a vehicle in massachusetts "30 DAYS OR MORE IN AGGREGATE IN ANY ONE YEAR" the vehicle is subject to being registered and in sured in Mass.

    When I first graduated from college, I still had my car registered and insured at my parent's address in NH but I was living in MA. I was pulled over a few times, and every time, the officer made a stink about the fact that I had a MA license and a NH car. (My license was up for renewal when I had just graduated, and since it was likely that I was going to be living in MA for a long time due to my job, I decided to get a MA license...) So, there are only a couple ways to stay out of trouble.

    1. You are a college student
    2. You are in the military.

    There may be more, but those are the two I know.

    At the time I would simply carry my WPI student ID with me and show it to the cop, tell him I was still a college student. That was good enough for him! Probably wouldn't work anymore, what with the gray hair and all. :rolleyes:

    They definitely frown on not getting their registry fees and excise taxes!

    We have a summer place in Maine now, and I thought about the same issues, except that it's even more expensive to keep a car in Maine than MA!

    Update;

    So my hassle in MA has now extended to NH as well. Same deal, officer said it is all about revenue. So off the record, it was recommended I just get the vehicle out of my name and into that of a relative, opening them up to liability.

    So if I am Bill Gates, I reside in Seattle, but I have a summer home on the East Coast, am I required to put my summer home car on Washington plates? It wouldn't be possible to change my license . My conclusion is that this problem is solely due to the fact that MA and NH are border states that fight for revenue, and Bill Gates would not have this problem if he were a multi state homeowner.

    So now I will basically gift my car to a family member :( or I will go about putting the vehicle in an LLC. I am about to create an LLC in NH, and now I would need to do one in MA as well... :(
