Hey guys, my name is Stephen. I've been a lurker on this forum for some time now, but never posted. The question I have is how do you get into a Ferrari shop? I'm A master technician for another brand, but I have no experience with Ferrari. What kind of experience do I need to get? is there anything I can do to be more desirable to a shop? For example is there a certain manufacture I should work for as a stepping stone. Its my dream to work for Ferrari, even my 3 year old son can name every Ferrari model. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In the meantime I would do a search for past threads on the topic. I have seen several over the years. I think the short answer is work your way up, I think dealers prefer past experience with European cars, especially German. Independents you can work your way up from sweeping floors and oil changes.

    Ferrari uses mostly Bosch systems.

A good background in BMW or Mercedes is a big plus.

In my opinion most of the really good Ferrari mechanics came from that background. Generally a better, wider scope of knowledge than the Ferrari lifers.

    As Mr. Crall states above.

I'm no master tech, nor am I mechanic... but what I might try first (if I was in the same shoes) is to become acquainted with the technology is read the manuals and WSM on ferraridatabase.com. This will give you the basics of all the models. From there its just applying the technical data and learning the "tricks"... that or learn on a Porsche 928. After managing that car, anything else is cake! ;)

I give you credit for having a goal and working to figure out how to get there. Do you have any independent Ferrari mechanics in your area? You could give them a call, introduce yourself, and ask them some questions about what type of experience they look for and where they hire from. This would be a great way to also start meeting and networking with the right people that may potentially provide an employment opportunity. You could of course do the same with your local dealer too.

You live in Cumming, where i live also, and you are very close to Ferrari of Atlanta. Call Will Campbell the GM there and he can give you some guidance. Good luck.

I have lived in Europe for over 20 years.

It is NOT what you see in the movies.

It is BETTER .......... and it is MUCH WORSE.

Same as anywhere else, but different. Sometimes very different.

If you grew up in small town America in the 60's or earlier you will have few issues living here. If you grew up ANYWHERE in America in the 80's or 90's, you are going to expereince "Shell-Shock."

    Back OT,

IF you a SUPER HARD A&&ED, Minutist Detail-Centric, ABSOLUTE PERFECTIONIST who works Purely to STANDARD and NOT to TIME, where holiday "Half-Day Schedule" means to you, you ONLY work 12 hours that day, call Dave Helms in Boulder, CO.

BUT before you do, look yourself in the mirror ........... real F&$#)&G hard.

IF you are NOT all that, more, AND a bag of chips, Do NOT call him.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. If it's a calling and obsession, there's probably no better mentor. If it's just a job, probably none worse.

I think you'd find that virtually every real Fcar tech who does or has posted here is 'called' to these cars, it's the internexperts that cause most of them to have disappeared from posting. You will find no argument from any of them that it is far more lucrative to become a shop that repairs any other european mass produced marque.

there is a balance, Ferrari techs are threatened that FerrariChat has let the secret out 1) DIY is possible 2) good shops & bad shops are post and search away 3) the business in Ferrari arbitrage has been minimized through FerrariChat. DIY'ers fall in the trap that they are free to post what they want and sound like an expert until a real expert comes along and completely embarrasses them and puts them in their place. in the long run I think FerrariChat is good as the good Ferrari techs and good DIY'ers are both rewarded. the pond scum gets scrapped away.

I don't see how this is/has been a secret the techs are trying to keep. Even the best DIYer just isn't going to have the insight of someone who wrenches on a marque day after day.

There's a reason there are pros. DIYers aren't going to put pros out of business. If anything, they are going to give them better business. While the service manager may want to change your oil, the guy under the car sure as hell doesn't. He wants to open up your engine when you have a major failure.

I have no doubt that FerrariChat has benefited the Ferrari ownership experience greatly.

It is also true that the unregulated nature of the internet (hope it remains that way) makes "caveat emptor" more important than ever.

The point being that these are of a different ilk. Currently another thread is running about 'annual fluids', the pros chimed in with a respectable retort, only for others to boo-hoo the concept and make into the 'wicked tech' thread.
To each their own, I cannot realise the return on an engine or transmission overhaul that 10 annuals brings in, but those 10 annuals might save owners a considerable sum by preventive and early diagnosis.

To the OP, as mentioned, IF your desire is in these cars, follow the dream, but it will probably see a downsize in income! But isn't that why we have proctologists? Hardly my first choice of specialty compared to the 'brain surgeon', rocket scientist', you get the picture.

Thank you guys for all the good advice. And I can't agree more with what you said. I don't want to spend my life making money but doing something I don't have a passion for. life is to short

    Quoted for ABSOLUTE truth.

Who do the smart DIY guys call when the going gets tough? The PROs. The successful Indies. They have more incentive to tell me the straight truth than even a Ferrari dealership.

Sadly two of the VERY best rarely post anymore for the exact reason as mentioned in Post #16.

Hi Steve, as others have said... follow your passion!

Based upon what I experienced/ observed in my tenure:
    • "On time" means 10 minutes early
    • Embrace—do not resist—modern technology
    • Memorize the Bosch Handbook
    • Know the difference between a sensor and an actuator
    • Do the 'scut work' with a smile
    • Don't compromise your integrity for $$
    • Be a team player, do not hoard information/ knowledge
    • Don't gossip
    • Appreciate the history/ learn about the marque
    • It's ok to say "I don't know", don't make s**t up

    Good luck!!

    Rob

Sorry I did not drop by (didn't know) when I met him face-2-face for the very first time last August. We have been internet and phone Buddies for several years.

Just had to drop by and teach him and his Frau how to pour REAL (German) beer when my family and I were visiting the USA.
