I'm not asking what you guy's use as I've read previous threads. But my question is If I put any 75w90 gl4 or 80w90 gl4 gear oil in my 308 could it be harmful.

In addition to bearing and gear lubrication, the oil friction characteristics must be compatible with synchro (steel on steel) and limited slip (steel on friction material) functionality. So yes, there is the danger to do harm, which could present as increased wear or improper operation IMHO.

When it comes to gear oil for your ride, a 75w90 GL4 or 80w90 GL4 can do the trick for many transmissions. But, you gotta make sure it matches with the manufacturer's specifications. The wrong viscosity or additive composition could affect performance and potentially harm the transmission parts.
Oh, and consider the operating conditions and climate. If you're not sure, think about splurging on some top-notch synthetic gear oil that meets all the standards. It'll keep things running smoothly and last longer.
