Has anyone come up with a good fix for a 328 (in my case, a 1986 US car) driver side mirror that rotates down on the housing? (The glass is fine, but the whole unit moves up/down on the hinge.

I need to tighten it, in a manner of speaking, but there doesn't appear to be a way to do so. (One can tighten the bracket to the door, but that doesn't do anything for the rotation in the housing.)

    Any ideas, short of replacement?

Mine has an allen head screw on the back of the mirror where it pivots. Mine needs tightened every so often as it starts to move after a while when I close the door. Mine's an 89 but IIRC my 87 was the same.

I forgot. You have to remove the plastic cover that hides the screw. Mine are missing.

you have to remove the cover - be careful, as you can gouge the body work ... I use a tiny hobby screwdriver, to pry up the cover.

they use some lock tight on the hex nut... i think they just work lose after opening and closing the door....easiest repair on the car.

Had the same problem... there's an allen screw on the front side under the cover that
will tighten it up no problem.

The plastic covers on the hinge are a bit delicate and the cost of a replacement one is fairly steep so be careful I bought a set of metric Allen wrenches and have it in the tool roll along with a small screwdriver (for plastic cover prying) should the mirror loosen on the road. I don't recall if it is the front (smaller) or rear cover.

I second on the expensive little plastic covers.
So with that in mind, a little dab of rubber cement or clear sealant on the covers prior to closing will ensure they don't pop off & fly away.

You all should put those little plastic covers away and put them on only if you show your car.

    Thanks everyone!

Y'know, it's funny -- I have a cover on the driver's side, but the one is missing on the passenger side. I should have just looked at the passenger side! Now I feel like a dummy.

Mine was doing exact same thing so what I'd was I took the Allen bolt out, clean the thread and before I put it back I added two drops of the Loctite (blue) and screwed it back on. I let it sits for 24 hours for it to cure. It's been three years now and still tight. You might want to try this as it works for me.

Just tightened it. I actually still have the front covers on both sides. (I'm missing the short end piece on the passenger window.)

Took me longer to find the right sized allen wrench than to remove, tighten and replace.

    Thanks for the help y'all.

If you just tighten in without using loctite, it will get loose again in time but hopefully not for a long time.

Where can you get those little plastic covers and how much do they usually go for?

I bought my replacement from Ricambi.... not cheap - $50 as I recall. But remember
that someone had to make a mold, inject a bunch of them, and hope that someday
they'd recoup the cost to manufacture.

They are $50 per side. I think Verell makes them for Ricambi and other places. You'll see them on eBay too.

Had the same problem with mine Sam. Over the course of year I had to retighten the darn thing three times. Finally ened up putting a dab of low strength loc tite on the screw and no further drooping.

Which cover tightens the mirror to keep it from drooping? Front of mirror or rear?

    Thanks for the help.
