I recently purchased a 1983 Mondial 3.0 QV. The car just had it's 50k engine out service. I was driving the car down the highway when white smoke started coming from the engine compartment, one of the braided oil hoses had a hole worn threw it. I replaced the hose and now I got a problem I don't understand. The car starts but idles rough. If I leave the car idle for a few minutes the idle smooths out. However when I try to drive it the car goes crazy. When I attempt to start off in first gear the car acts like the clutch is grabbing intermittently and it bucks like a bronco. I have not tried shifting to another gear when happens. Does anyone know how to get the diagnostics out of the computer without display? Does anyone know where I can find the definitions for the codes that come out? How do you check timing? I saw no mention of timing lights in the documentation I've been finding online. Lastly anyone got any thoughts as to what maybe wrong? Thanks bruce
How much oil? Sounds like you have a major ignition misfire. Check the plug wells and caps ASAP. Don't feel bad I had it happen on a Countach talk about freaking me out. Joe Frazar
Just when you try to drive it? Did you get oil in the bell housing and get oil on the clutch and now it shudders on take-up? Is there a triangular plate or a triangular hole under the oil filter?
diagnostics? codes? huh? you've got a 1983 mondial there bub, ain't no diagnostics or codes to be had. definitely check the dizzy caps for oil contamination. as suggested above it would probably be wise to remove the timing belt covers and see if the timing belts have oil contamination. good luck!
thanks for the reply, I do not think it's oil on the timing belts. I swapped out one of the relays used for the fuel injecting at start up and now the car starts up every time the key is turned. Most of the oil hit the part of the engine that is well protected from foreign matter. bruce
Thanks for the reply. I already pulled all the plugs and used a timing light they all light off, no oil found. As for the amount of oil? I lost about 3 quarts most of it on my garage floor. bruce
